The MRI Technologist performs all duties associated with acquisition, processing, submission for interpretation and archiving of MRI images; responsible for the quality of patient care; performance of daily activities, maintenance, and quality control performance. The MRI Technologist performs routine to complex magnetic resonance procedures and related techniques, producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. This role requires Level 2 MR Personnel trained and educated in the broader aspects of MR safety issues, including but not limited to issues related to the potential for RF-related thermal loading or burns and direct neuromuscular excitation from rapidly changing gradients. The technologist reviews all diagnostic imaging physician orders and follows written and/or verbal protocols and instructions, with questionable orders reviewed by a Radiologist. They communicate equipment malfunctions and low inventory levels to the appropriate supervisor/lead, and educate patients and families regarding the exam and answer any questions as appropriate. Quality assurance, visual preventative safety inspections, and reporting of dangerous department or equipment conditions are also key responsibilities. The role demands an understanding of human cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, pathology, radiopharmacology, and medical terminology. Ensuring physician's order and patient's clinical history information is documented and available for the Radiologist, and reviewing patient history and screening questions/answers to ensure patient safety for the exam are critical. The technologist assumes responsibility for patient needs during procedures by observing changes in status, making appropriate interventions, or contacting the primary care giver for instructions. They identify, prepare, position patients, and competently perform procedures using established MR protocols or as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner for diagnostic interpretation or intervention, to achieve the highest quality image. Performing venipuncture and maintaining intravenous access, and identifying, preparing, and/or administering medications as prescribed by and under the direction of a licensed independent practitioner in accordance with state and federal regulations are also part of the duties. Evaluating images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded, and identifying and managing emergency situations are essential. Conducting POC Creatinine clearance testing, knowledge of emergency shut-down procedures and how to properly react to a quench, and selecting appropriate pulse sequences with consideration given to established protocols and other factors influencing data acquisition parameters are also required. The technologist manipulates and reconstructs digital data for display or hard copy records, ensuring proper identification is evident, and maintains archival storage of digital data as appropriate. Assisting in maintaining supply inventory and following established Safety Standards, Policy, and Procedures to ensure a safe environment in the MRI zones for self, patients, visitors, and staff are crucial. Directing Imaging Technologist Assistants as needed and performing preceptor duties for new staff are also part of the role. Establishing ownership of the clinical area by taking pride in the appearance and readiness of exam rooms, equipment, and supplies, and taking the initiative to help other modalities/areas of the Imaging Center as assigned or when workload/area allows are expected. Adherence to Service Excellence Standards and Expectations, exhibiting excellent customer relations, courteous communication skills, and the ability to work with others with good judgment are also important. Demonstrating courtesy, compassion, and respect in adherence to the hospital's philosophy and policy for promoting positive work and customer environments, and working as a team to continuously improve work quality are expected. A commitment to flexible work schedules when necessary to ensure patient care, and presenting oneself in a positive manner through personal attire and etiquette are also required. Attending required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services is mandatory.
