About The Position

This role is responsible for maintaining the track and track bed in good condition, ensuring safety and operational efficiency. The MOW Worker will perform various track maintenance tasks, learn and apply safety regulations, and operate associated equipment and tools. The position also involves record-keeping and potentially assisting with train cars. Safety is a core value, and employees are expected to demonstrate safety advocacy and compliance with all rules.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years prior work experience involving manual labor or mechanical work.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license; CDL preferred.
  • Must be able to perform duties that require heavy lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and 75 pounds on occasion.
  • Knowledge of and skills in using hand tools, including wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, measuring tapes, etc.
  • Skills in using power tools and hydraulic equipment, including portable grinders, rail saws, spike pullers, track wrench machines, power drills.
  • Must be able to meet physical requirements of the position.
  • High School Diploma or the Equivalent.
  • Verbal comprehension: Understand oral and written communications, both general and technical.
  • Communication skills: Provide clear instructions/directions.
  • Reasoning skills: Problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Functional/Technical Skills: Has the technical and functional background to perform job duties at a high level of competence.
  • Compliance with safety and operating rules is required.

Nice To Haves

  • CDL preferred.
  • Prefer experience reading and comprehending safety manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, test materials, drawings, schematics, and procedure manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Keeping the track and track bed in good shape, checking for broken rails, defective switches, deteriorating track bed, track obstructions, and weather-related problems.
  • Performing tasks associated with track work including pulling and driving spikes, replacing ties, surfacing track, changing rail, bars, bolts, shoveling rock ballast, and working with other track apparatus.
  • Learning and applying FRA Track Safety Standards, GCOR, and RWP regulations.
  • Performing maintenance in a timely manner.
  • Learning to operate in a safe and efficient manner all equipment and tools associated with track maintenance.
  • Maintaining equipment associated with track maintenance such as track-wrench.
  • Removing and replacing ballast.
  • Operating large non-powered hand tools such as shovels, picks, axes, cutters, and sledgehammers.
  • Operating electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic hand tools such as drills, impact wrenches, jacks, power saws, and grinders.
  • Maintaining accurate records of time worked, track conditions encountered, and corrective action taken.
  • Assisting in working on train cars as needed.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
