About The Position

The Mould Maker Apprentice role is an hourly, progressive rate position with immediate opening. The apprentice will assist with troubleshooting and repairs on molds at Injection Molding Machines, as well as mold repairs, preventive maintenance, and engineering changes in the tool room. The role involves analyzing specifications, laying out metal stock, operating machine tools, and fitting/assembling parts to fabricate and repair metalworking tools, molds, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges. The apprentice will also participate in the design and rework of tooling, and check equipment for wear or damage. Record keeping, maintaining a clean work area according to 5S principles, and performing all job functions safely are key aspects of the role. The schedule often requires flexibility, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, due to plant downtime. Compliance with CTPAT/PIP, the Magna Code of Conduct, and applicable quality systems (IATF-16949) is expected. The apprentice will also support continuous improvement initiatives and adhere to the Employee Charter and Plastcoat Employee Handbook.

Requirements

  • Minimum completion of 1st year Tool and Die Maker or Mold Maker program with reputable college, 2nd year preferred
  • Experience with hand and power tools
  • Machining experience
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Well-developed organizational and time management skills
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Basic knowledge of Tooling functions
  • Ability to work independently and in a teamwork environment

Responsibilities

  • Assist with trouble shooting and repairs on molds at Injection Molding Machines
  • Assist with Mold Repairs, Preventive Maintenance, and Engineering changes in the tool room
  • Analyze specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metal working tools, moulds, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges
  • Participate in the design and rework of both new and old tooling
  • Check and inspect all equipment, including lifting and hoisting equipment, for wear, damage or malfunction
  • Keep records up to date and accurate
  • Work within the guidelines of the Plastcoat Employee Handbook
  • Maintain clean, organized work area in accordance with the principles of 5S and operate daily within these standards
  • Schedule often revolves around plant downtime, which includes evenings, weekends and scheduled holidays; Must be able to work flexible hours
  • Perform all job functions in a safe and healthful manner, abiding by all health, safety and environmental rules and regulations, promoting safety in the workplace
  • Comply with the requirements of CTPAT/PIP
  • Conduct business in an ethical manner in compliance with the Magna Code of Conduct
  • Report all accidents/incidents and unsafe conditions/behavior
  • Adhere to applicable quality systems and IATF-16949 standards
