About The Position

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC Health Department) is seeking a Motor Vehicle Operator. This role is part of the DOHMH Bureau of Facilities Planning and Administrative Services, which provides critical services including the coordination of physical movement of supplies and materials between programs and facilities, and the administration of salvage operations for excess durable goods. The incumbent will operate motor vehicles such as passenger cars, vans, and light trucks, and may be responsible for driving employees and materials, acting as a chauffeur, and ensuring the safety and proper functioning of the assigned vehicle. This position operates under broad administrative direction and performs related work.

Requirements

  • Must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York.
  • Must maintain a valid New York State driver license for the duration of employment.
  • Must bring copies of original documentation to the interview, including proof of identity for employment eligibility (e.g., Valid U.S. Passport, Permanent Resident Card/Green Card, or Driver’s license), proof of education, current resume, and proof of address/NYC Residency dated within the last 60 days.
  • Must produce original documents and Social Security card at the time of the on-boarding appointment if selected.

Responsibilities

  • Operates motor vehicles such as passenger cars, vans, and light trucks.
  • Drives a passenger van carrying employees and material to and from work locations.
  • Acts as a chauffeur to an Agency official.
  • Responsible for tools, supplies, materials, and equipment carried in or on the assigned vehicle.
  • Assists in loading and unloading of materials, equipment, and passengers.
  • Checks tires, oil and fuel levels of the vehicles, replenishes fluids as needed, and checks the vehicle to see that lights, horn, and brakes appear to be operating properly.
  • Reports any noticeable mechanical defects in the vehicle.
  • Changes tires or wheels.
  • Prepares Trip Reports, or enters trip data in computerized applications, as required.
