About The Position

Safely operates large state vehicles in excess of 30,000 lbs. to remove waste and recycling from UF campus. Drives front-load refuse truck and empties contents of dumpsters and carts into the collection truck. Will also drive to some off-campus locations for collection and to disposal or processing sites operated by Alachua County and various private partners. Maintains collection information in electronic format via tablet noting the collection stops as they are completed. Functions as part of the Recycling & Solid Waste Management team. Able to communicate effectively to the supervisor as well as other team members on a daily basis. This is a flexible work environment in which the team members fill in for different routes as needed. Operates external equipment such as cart tippers in order to safely collect recyclable materials. Will move and relocate food compost carts, paper recycling carts, bottle & can recycling carts, and other collection containers in order to facilitate collection into the larger vehicle. May also operate smaller carrier truck capable of moving front-load dumpsters and collecting baled cardboard, furniture, and metals as well as other large items. May work campus events to provide recycling collection assistance during normal business hours and non-business hours such as nights and weekends. During daily route on campus, driver will record all collection stops completed and document and report any issues encountered. Driver will immediately phone or radio Supervisor to notify of any situations where immediate attention or action is required. Performs daily pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections and keeps trip logs as required. At the end of the shift cleans cab and washes down collection vehicle. Notes any preventive maintenance or work that needs to be performed on the vehicle that might prevent its safe operation. Reports any concerns, issues, or defects to the Supervisor in a timely manner. Attends departmental meetings and other university related training sessions. Performs related work and general departmental work as required.

Requirements

  • Completion of the ninth grade and one year of appropriate experience.
  • Appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required in order to operate a truck of this size and maintaining a valid CDL is a requirement of the position.
  • Valid CDL Driver’s License Required.
  • Must hold a valid Class “B” or higher Florida commercial drivers' license as a condition of employment.
  • Subject to pre-employment and continuing post-employment drug and alcohol testing as required by the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Test Act of 1991.
  • Must pass a post-offer health assessment as required in order to hold a CDL.

  • At least one year of experience driving front-load recycling and solid waste trucks.
