About The Position

Iowa State University is seeking a Motor Vehicle Operator II to work as a delivery driver within the Central Receiving operation. Central Receiving provides a single-point delivery network for the ISU campus, receiving, tracking, and redistributing university-funded materials to ISU departments. This position is responsible for the daily delivery of packages, palletized goods, and equipment to the Iowa State University community. This is a physical position involving climbing stairs and lifting/carrying packages daily, with the ability to lift up to 100 lbs. The successful individual will demonstrate sound judgment, a sense of urgency, and provide high-level customer service. They will also perform as a laborer in a fast-paced warehouse environment when not driving. The role requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to warehousing and delivery, the ability to perform heavy manual labor, and the ability to work in varying weather conditions.

Requirements

  • One year experience driving trucks.
  • Possession of the class (class A, B, C or D) of drivers license appropriate to vehicle driven and/or materials transported.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to read, write, follow instructions, and communicate orally.
  • Ability to make sounds judgments and decisions.
  • Ability to safely operate and insure proper maintenance of vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing operation of state vehicles.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle laws.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Delivery experience; specifically within package and freight delivery
  • Warehouse receiving experience
  • Experience using electronic devices, such as smart phones, tablets, and computers
  • Experience using forklifts and electric pallet jacks
  • Ability to operate moving equipment such as pallet movers and forklifts.
  • Knowledge of proper loading/securing techniques for specialized cargo.

Responsibilities

  • Reads work order to determine materials to be transported.
  • Consults with person responsible for materials to be hauled in order to determine special needs.
  • Verifies load with suppliers against order request.
  • Loads and unloads cargo including hazardous materials or sensitive instrument.
  • Secures cargo using chains, rubberized straps, padding to prevent damage.
  • Assembles furniture or exhibits.
  • Services vehicles, both interior and exterior, including cleaning and washing with power equipment, refueling, and other minor items of vehicle maintenance as required.
  • Performs as a Laborer when not driving.
  • Responds to calls for emergency service, including snow removal, as required.
  • May require occasional in-state and out-of-state overnight travel.
