The Motor Vehicle Mechanic repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks or tractors. Diagnoses, analyzes and troubleshoots vehicle malfunctions and repair problems. This role is responsible for maintaining and repairing government vehicles, completing maintenance tickets and repair orders in a timely manner, and disposing of waste materials per regulations and applicable laws. The mechanic will stay abreast of the latest technology and installation procedures, inspect, diagnose and isolate vehicle and equipment malfunctions, and troubleshoot mechanical problems to determine the extent of necessary repairs. They will repair all assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure they are safe and dependable, including lighting systems, sirens, wheel bearings, radiators, heating and air-conditioning systems, springs, hydraulic systems, catalytic converters, and fuel pumps. The role involves utilizing on-board computer diagnostic systems and other test equipment to assess and analyze malfunctions, and interacting with customers to keep them informed of vehicle status and repair needs. Additionally, the mechanic will inspect and test equipment for mechanical defects, replace worn parts, remove, replace, adjust, or clean defective components, flush radiators, perform oil changes, check fluids, diagnose tread wear, replace batteries, perform engine tune-ups, and utilize appropriate techniques for armoring vehicles as directed. The position also includes repairing automotive locks, installing new vehicle equipment, performing State vehicle safety and emission inspections, identifying necessary parts and supplies, estimating costs and labor time, responding to emergency road calls, and road testing vehicles. The role requires responding to emails and telephone calls, and ensuring the necessary provision of vehicles and support for customers. All other position-related duties as assigned or requested will also be performed.
