About The Position

Under the general direction of the Supervisor of Motor Vehicles, an employee in this class is responsible for the inspection of motor vehicles before registration, ensuring safety and ownership standards applicable by law. Work is performed in accordance with standard practices and techniques, the employee is expected to use some judgment and initiative.

Requirements

  • Possess Automotive Service Excellence Certification.
  • A High School Diploma or its equivalency and completion of a course in automotive technology through an accredited vocational or trade school.
  • A High School Diploma and two (2) years experience in automotive maintenance.
  • Applicant must complete the Certification course of a Road Test through the Department of Education within one year of employment as a Motor Vehicle Inspector.

  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, procedures and methods used for inspecting all types of vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the requirements in the laws regarding standards for vehicles to be operated on public roads.
  • Knowledge of engine sounds, balance on cars and alignments as well as hazardous fumes and odors.
  • Ability to recognize and analyze VIN numbers and VIN number points.
  • Ability to clearly explain deficiencies to the vehicle operator regarding what needs to be accomplished before the vehicle can pass inspection.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects all vehicles needing licensing in or to operate on public roads, and checks for compliance with safety ownership standards applicable by law.
  • Signs off on inspected vehicles.
  • Checks Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) with the registration to establish ownership.
  • Reports discrepancies with VIN to the Investigation Bureau and holds the vehicle until ownership has been established.
  • Explains to motor vehicle owners and inspection requirement that must be met before the vehicle can past inspection.
  • Opens and closes the Inspection Lane on a daily basis.
  • Ascertains that cashiers and other employees on the Inspection Lane has all required documents for the day i.e. sufficient change for cashiers, license plates and registration forms.
  • Performs other related duties.
