About The Position

This position involves operating, servicing, and maintaining medium and heavy trucks or other internal combustion engine equipment used in routine road maintenance or construction operations. The role also includes operating a truck for a state department or institution, picking up and delivering materials, equipment, supplies, etc. The Motor Equipment Operator will be responsible for the proper use and care of assigned motor equipment, requesting necessary repairs, keeping equipment clean, and checking fuel, oil, grease, water, and air. Minor running repairs to equipment may also be required. Additionally, the role may involve operating catch basin cleaner equipment or performing manual labor as needed.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the state laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles on the highway.
  • Skill in the operation and servicing of motor equipment other than heavy diesel and gasoline motor equipment.
  • Ability to make emergency minor running repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Ability to understand readily and carry out simple oral and written directions.
  • Completion of eight school grades.
  • Employment as an operator of trucks or other motor equipment, involving the performance of some manual labor.
  • Possession of the proper operator’s license issued in conformance to requirements of the Rhode Island Registry of Motor Vehicles to operate above-described equipment and must maintain such licensure as a condition of employment.
  • Must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician’s certificate at the time of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, service, and maintain medium and heavy trucks or other internal combustion engine equipment used in routine road maintenance or construction operations.
  • Operate a truck for a state department or institution, performing tasks such as transporting food, laundry, equipment, supplies, refuse, etc.
  • Assist in loading and unloading of truck vehicles.
  • Operate a truck performing snow plowing and sanding duties.
  • Be responsible for the proper use and care of assigned motor equipment.
  • Request necessary repairs for equipment.
  • Keep equipment clean.
  • Check fuel, oil, grease, water, and air.
  • Make emergency minor running repairs to equipment.
  • Operate catch basin cleaner equipment (as required).
  • Perform manual labor (as required).
  • Do related work as required.
