Mortgage Underwriter Team Lead
About The Position
Tomo is a digital mortgage company focused on making the lending process faster, less frustrating, and more affordable by eliminating excessive fees and inflated rates. We are seeking a high-impact Underwriting Team Lead to join our expanding mortgage operations team. This role is a "player-coach" position, responsible for ensuring loan quality and efficiency through a combination of advanced technology and strategic human oversight. The ideal candidate will be a technical expert who is adept at managing the pipeline and developing the team. This role involves modernizing the loan origination system (LOS) and optimizing workflows in a fast-paced, tech-forward environment.
Requirements
- 5+ years of recent mortgage underwriting experience.
- Proven track record of informal leadership or mentoring.
- Deep knowledge of Conventional, FHA, VA, and Jumbo loans.
- DE and VA/SAR certifications are highly preferred.
- Experience with Byte or similar LOS platforms is a plus.
- Meticulous attention to detail and a passion for finding solutions to complex financial profiles.
- Ability to translate complex guidelines into actionable advice for the team.
- Ability to effectively bridge the gap between operations and product.
- Thrive in a high-change, "startup" style environment where workflows evolve.

Responsibilities
- Actively balance the pipeline of new reviews among the team, load balancing as necessary to ensure aggressive turnaround times are met.
- Lead bi-weekly team meetings focused on resolving complex loan-level issues and technical questions.
- Serve as the primary owner of the internal knowledge base (Guru), ensuring content is verified, updated, and reflects the latest guidelines and tech workflows.
- Monitor the Scenario Desk and internal channels to provide real-time guidance to the team, acting as the first line of defense for technical and guideline questions.
- Lead the onboarding and expert-level training for new hires on the LOS (Byte) and AI-driven tools.
- Collaborate with the Underwriting Manager on strategic projects, product updates, and LOS modernization efforts.
