About The Position

The Walters Art Museum is seeking a Monitor Room Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of the Museum’s 24/7 Monitor Room. This role involves managing the scheduling, training, and development of security staff across all three shifts. The Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for visitors, staff, and the art collection by monitoring museum activities, reporting hazards, maintaining order, and enforcing museum policies and procedures. The regular schedule is Monday-Friday, 12am-8am, but the position requires flexibility as an essential employee, including remaining on duty until relieved and providing back-up coverage for other shifts. A valid State of Maryland Security Guard Certification is required.

Requirements

  • Valid State of Maryland Security Guard Certification
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum of five (5) years of previous experience in the security field
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience
  • Sound knowledge of security principles, practices, and procedures
  • First Aid/AED/CPR certifications
  • Proficiency with monitoring and controlling alarm systems, CCTV, and 2-way radio communications and other communication systems
  • Background in preparing incident reports
  • Experience using computers and standard office programs or software
  • Ability to document details in a clear and concise manner
  • Ability to multitask, properly assess and respond to emergencies, and take appropriate actions while performing under pressure
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, and public relations skills
  • Must be a team player and able to communicate effectively with visitors and staff at all levels, as well as with representatives from outside agencies
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • The museum does not sponsor work visas

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision for all shifts in the Monitor Room, including completing monthly schedules and ensuring all time off requests are covered.
  • Ensure all shifts are aware of daily events and special needs, and that critical information is passed down from shift to shift.
  • Train new Monitor Room officers on camera and alarm systems, and Museum policies and procedures, ensuring officers maintain required skill levels.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of direct reports, providing guidance, coaching, and feedback, including preparing annual performance evaluations.
  • Conduct daily personnel inspections to ensure security staff are properly equipped and dressed in uniform.
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are followed and operational requirements are met.
  • Conduct random post inspections of the museum to ensure a safe and secure environment.
  • Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of the art collection, building structure, floorplans, and museum policies and procedures.
  • Inspect the art at various times during the shift and report any unusual circumstances.
  • Maintain a positive work relationship with Conservation, Registrars, and Collections Technicians to understand the safekeeping of all art.
  • Complete TSA certification to ensure proper procedures are followed during artwork packaging for shipment.
  • Uphold the Museum’s Visitor Promise by ensuring the museum is safe, welcoming, and accessible.
  • Patrol throughout the museum, monitoring visitor and staff activity to ensure policy compliance and a safe environment.
  • Check for fire and safety hazards, vandalism, suspicious activity, and improper behavior.
  • Report all incidents to the Manager of Safety and Security.
  • Respond to security and safety threats, fire, and other hazardous situations as directed.
  • Complete Incident Commander training to respond to all emergencies or hazardous situations.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the Museum’s Emergency Operations Plan and complete training for various emergencies.
  • Assume Incident Command in an emergency, providing guidance to ensure proper procedures are implemented.
  • Investigate and control incidents, providing assistance and determining the best course of action.
  • Report all security, safety, and environmental issues immediately to the Manager of Safety and Security.
  • Prepare written reports of damage and unsafe conditions and ensure incident reports are completed by the end of the shift.
  • Respond to visitor-related situations, ensuring professional and customer-friendly resolution.
  • Complete First Aid/CPR/AED training.
  • Remain alert and attentive to the needs of visitors and staff, ensuring the museum is free from danger or hazardous situations.
  • Maintain current operating knowledge of alarm systems and CCTV systems.
  • Answer telephone and radio transmissions, monitor activity in and around the museum, and alert the Manager of Safety and Security to areas needing attention.
  • Place emergency calls as directed to fire, police, and other emergency agencies.
  • Serve as the communications hub for the museum.
  • Respond to the special needs of visitors and staff, including those with hearing impairments, mental or physical challenges, or visual impairments.
  • Maintain working knowledge of policies and procedures regarding service animals, unattended children, and armed visitors (law enforcement).
  • Ensure support equipment (elevators, lifts, etc.) are working properly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
