Molecular Biologist II

Bureau Veritas•San Francisco, CA
•$34 - $40

About The Position

The Molecular Biologist II provides molecular biology and cell culture support for an ion channel drug discovery group focused on pain research. The role generates DNA constructs for wild-type and mutant ion channels, supports cell line development for electrophysiology and biochemical assays, and contributes to developing fluorescence-based pharmacology assays. It requires hands-on skills in standard molecular biology and mammalian cell culture, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. The position typically works Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, with flexibility to meet departmental needs and complete assigned projects. The employee follows client and Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services quality, health, safety, security, and environmental policies; complies with applicable management systems and regulatory requirements; and adheres to the BV-CPS Quality System. Other duties may be assigned according to manager direction, department needs, and workload.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or a closely related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
  • At least two years of relevant laboratory experience with molecular biology and mammalian cell culture techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, including transient and stable transfection.
  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques including cloning, PCR, restriction digestion, gel electrophoresis, and plasmid preparation.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including communication in group settings with colleagues and clients.
  • Organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to perform multiple tasks and prioritize workload to meet or exceed deadlines.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with Windows, Word, and Excel.
  • Attention to detail, a positive attitude, self-motivation, and strong engagement.
  • Ability to champion company values, including team engagement.
  • Ability to present facts and recommendations effectively.
  • Technical problem-solving and process-improvement skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with site-directed mutagenesis and DNA sequence analysis.
  • Familiarity with fluorescence-based assay formats, such as FLIPR and dye-based assays.
  • Experience in ion channel biology, electrophysiology support, or neuroscience/pain research.

Responsibilities

  • Design and generate DNA constructs encoding wild-type and mutant ion channels, including through site-directed mutagenesis, for structure-function studies and binding-site mapping.
  • Perform molecular cloning techniques, including PCR, restriction digestion, ligation, and plasmid preparation.
  • Verify constructs using restriction digests, gel electrophoresis, and sequence analysis, and troubleshoot cloning issues independently.
  • Culture and maintain mammalian cell lines and perform transient and stable transfections for ion channel expression.
  • Generate and characterize stable cell lines for electrophysiology, binding, and fluorescence-based assays.
  • Support the development and optimization of fluorescence-based assays, such as FLIPR and dye-based ion flux assays, for ion channel pharmacology.
  • Perform DNA/RNA expression analysis, including qPCR and gel-based methods, to confirm construct expression and cell-line fidelity.
  • Maintain accurate electronic laboratory notebook records and clear documentation of protocols and results.
  • Collaborate with electrophysiologists and pharmacologists to align construct and cell-line design with experimental needs.
  • Accurately and promptly report and record test data in electronic or handwritten notebooks as needed.
  • Prepare equipment for testing according to prescribed standards and specifications.
  • Maintain supplies, laboratory cleanliness, and analytical instrumentation as required.
  • Prepare stock solutions and keep shelves and reagents stocked.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current methods and products to be tested.
  • Follow client and company quality, health, safety, security, and environmental policies and procedures; comply with applicable management systems and regulatory agencies; and adhere to the BV-CPS Quality System.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager according to department needs and workload.
