About The Position

The Mold Setter is responsible for safely and efficiently performing mold changes, setting molds, connecting auxiliary equipment, and preparing injection molding machines for production. This position plays an important role in minimizing downtime between production runs and ensuring molds, machines, and related equipment are properly installed and ready for processing. The Mold Setter works closely with Process Technicians, Shift Managers, Production, Maintenance, Quality, and other departments to support safe and efficient production operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Previous experience setting molds in a plastic injection molding environment strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of plastic injection molding machines and mold change procedures preferred.
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, hoists, and other material handling equipment after required training and authorization.
  • Basic knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, water, and electrical connections used with injection molds.
  • Ability to recognize unsafe mold conditions, damaged equipment, and improper installations.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools safely.
  • Ability to read and follow production schedules, work instructions, and setup documentation.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Process Technicians, supervisors, and other employees.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or adjusted schedules based on production needs.
  • Familiarity with Lockout/Tagout procedures.
  • Experience working in an IATF 16949 or ISO 9001 manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, push, and pull as required.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, with assistance or mechanical lifting equipment used for heavier loads.
  • Ability to safely work around injection molding machines, molds, forklifts, cranes, hoists, and other industrial equipment.
  • Ability to climb ladders or platforms when properly trained and authorized.
  • Ability to work around hot surfaces, moving machinery, hydraulic systems, and industrial equipment.
  • Exposure to manufacturing noise, temperature variations, oils, lubricants, and other normal manufacturing conditions.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, gloves, and hearing protection when applicable.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Safely remove and install injection molds according to the production schedule and established procedures.
  • Verify the correct mold is selected before beginning a mold change.
  • Properly secure molds in injection molding machines using approved clamps, bolts, and mounting procedures.
  • Connect and disconnect water lines, hydraulic lines, pneumatic lines, electrical connections, hot runner systems, and other mold related components as required.
  • Install and remove ejector rods, knockout bars, mold protection components, and other required equipment.
  • Install and position mold temperature controllers, thermolators, conveyors, robots, dryers, grinders, and other auxiliary equipment as required.
  • Ensure all connections are properly installed, secured, and free from leaks.
  • Verify molds are properly aligned and secured before releasing the machine for processing.
  • Complete mold changes efficiently to minimize machine downtime.
  • Safely transport molds using forklifts, cranes, hoists, and other approved material handling equipment.
  • Follow established procedures for lifting, moving, installing, and removing molds.
  • Verify mold weights and ensure lifting equipment has the appropriate capacity before moving a mold.
  • Inspect lifting chains, straps, hooks, eyebolts, and other rigging equipment before use.
  • Ensure molds are properly secured during transportation.
  • Return molds to the designated storage location following removal from the machine.
  • Maintain mold storage areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Report damaged molds, lifting equipment, clamps, hoses, fittings, or other equipment immediately.
  • Work closely with Process Technicians to ensure machines are properly prepared for startup.
  • Assist with machine preparation and auxiliary equipment setup during mold changes.
  • Respond promptly to production schedule changes and mold change priorities.
  • Assist in identifying and correcting mold setup issues that may delay production.
  • Communicate mold, machine, or equipment concerns to the appropriate Process Technician, Shift Manager, Maintenance Technician, or supervisor.
  • Support efficient changeovers to reduce downtime and improve production performance.
  • Verify the work area is clean and ready for production following each mold change.
  • Inspect molds for visible damage, wear, water leaks, damaged fittings, or other concerns before and after installation.
  • Inspect clamps, bolts, hoses, fittings, connectors, and mold change equipment before use.
  • Report mold damage or equipment concerns before placing equipment into production.
  • Use company tools and equipment properly and maintain accountability for assigned tools.
  • Do not operate damaged or unsafe equipment.
  • Assist with basic mold cleaning and preparation as required.
  • Help maintain mold change equipment and tools in good working condition.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable OSHA requirements.
  • Follow established Lockout/Tagout procedures when required.
  • Follow established mold change and machine setup procedures at all times.
  • Use required personal protective equipment.
  • Operate forklifts, cranes, hoists, and other lifting equipment only when properly trained and authorized.
  • Never work under a suspended load.
  • Verify molds are properly secured before removing lifting equipment.
  • Ensure machine guarding and safety devices are properly installed before returning equipment to production.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment hazards, accidents, injuries, and near misses.
  • Maintain good housekeeping around injection molding machines, mold storage areas, and work areas.
  • Follow applicable company quality procedures and IATF 16949:2016 requirements.
  • Participate in required safety meetings, training, and inspections.
  • Complete required mold change documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Document mold or equipment concerns identified during mold changes.
  • Communicate mold change status and delays to the appropriate supervisor or Process Technician.
  • Provide clear shift to shift communication regarding incomplete mold changes or equipment concerns.
  • Follow the production schedule and communicate immediately when a mold change cannot be completed as planned.
  • Complete assigned documentation and responsibilities without repeated reminders.
  • Work cooperatively with Process Technicians, Production, Maintenance, Quality, Tool Room, and management.
  • Follow instructions and established work procedures consistently.
  • Take ownership of assigned mold changes and ensure work is completed correctly.
  • Respond appropriately to changing production priorities.
  • Maintain professional and respectful communication with coworkers and management.
  • Assist other Mold Setters and team members when needed.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts related to mold changes, safety, efficiency, and equipment reliability.
