About The Position

The Mohs Surgery Medical Assistant provides specialized clinical and administrative support to the Mohs surgeon and dermatology team. This role is responsible for ensuring efficient patient flow, maintaining sterile technique, assisting during surgical procedures, and supporting pre- and post-operative patient care. The MA must demonstrate strong attention to detail, procedural knowledge, and the ability to function in a high-volume surgical environment.

Requirements

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA, RMA, or equivalent) or relevant clinical experience
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in dermatology or surgical assisting
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and surgical instrumentation
  • Proficiency with EMR systems
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced surgical environment
  • Excellent patient communication and bedside manner
  • High level of professionalism and discretion
  • Team-oriented with the ability to anticipate provider needs
  • Prolonged standing during surgical procedures
  • Ability to assist in minor surgical procedures for extended periods
  • Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and surgical instruments
  • Requires adherence to PPE and infection control standards

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience assisting in Mohs micrographic surgery
  • Experience with dermatologic procedures (biopsies, excisions, closures)
  • Familiarity with histology/specimen handling
  • BLS/CPR certification

Responsibilities

  • Prepare procedure rooms for Mohs surgery, ensuring proper sterilization and equipment setup, this is inclusive of preparing lidocaine syringes, filling and preparing liquid nitrogen canisters and stocking exam rooms with appropriate linens
  • Assist the physician during Mohs micrographic surgery, including: Patient positioning and surgical site preparation, Instrument handling and sterile field maintenance, Hemostasis and wound dressing application
  • Perform local anesthetic preparation (per state regulations and physician direction)
  • Assist with excisions, closures, and reconstructive procedures
  • Process and label tissue specimens accurately for pathology
  • Ensure proper documentation and chain of custody for specimens
  • Room patients and obtain detailed medical histories, including medications and allergies
  • Educate patients on procedure expectations, risks, and post-operative care instructions
  • Provide wound care and dressing changes
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions during and after procedures
  • Conduct post-op follow-up calls and triage patient concerns
  • Document procedures, supplies, and patient interactions in the EMR accurately and in real time
  • Assist with surgical scheduling and coordination of multi-stage procedures
  • Verify consents and ensure all required documentation is completed prior to procedures
  • Support prior authorizations and insurance verification when needed
  • Maintain inventory of surgical supplies and ensure proper stock levels
  • Adhere to OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control protocols
  • Ensure all equipment is functioning properly and report issues promptly
  • Turn over rooms efficiently between cases to maintain provider productivity
