About The Position

The Mock Trial Advisor is responsible for guiding students through the process of simulating a real trial for competition. This involves recruiting students, preparing them legally and in courtroom etiquette, and ensuring a positive and competitive experience throughout the season, which runs from September to March. The advisor works with students, parents, an attorney advisor, and the Mock Trial Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of public speaking skills
  • Ability to develop analytical skills in students through facilitating discussion and problem solving
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, attorney advisor and community members involved in the program
  • Strong organizational skills to meet the needs of the program

Responsibilities

  • Recruit and register students for Mock Trial competition
  • Attend orientation meetings related to the competition
  • Recruit an Attorney Coach to work with the students
  • Distribute Case Materials to participants
  • Distribute and review Rules of Competition to participants
  • Distribute and review Rules of Evidence to participants
  • Coach the students in Courtroom decorum and dress
  • Facilitate and assist students in analyzing the case, preparing arguments, and practicing roles
  • Schedule meetings with students and attorney advisor to prepare for competition(s)
  • Communicate with students, parents, attorney advisor and Mock Trial Coordinator throughout the process
  • Arrange transportation to and from the competition(s)
  • Attend the Mock Trial competitions at the University of Pittsburgh and the City County Building
  • Submit a year-end report and take photos for yearbook
