About The Position

The Orange County Transportation Services Department has an opening for a Mobility on Demand (MOD) Driver. The work involves the responsibility for transporting residents on a designated time schedule. An employee in this class provides a safe, reliable, efficient, and customer friendly transit service to all residents of Orange County, maintaining knowledge of Orange County road systems, and providing administrative support by assisting in the Orange County Transportation Services (OCTS) office as needed. Work is performed under the general direction of the Transportation Operations Supervisor, with some leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the performance of duties, both in terms of planning and accomplishing work, and in making decisions regarding needs and requests. Supervision is not a responsibility of this class. Supervision over others is not required of this position. Position does related work as required. This is a safety sensitive position and participation in the Drug and Alcohol Program is required. Background Check is required. Fitness for Duty Assessment is required.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of work experience in driving a passenger vehicle in the transport of clients.
  • Possession of a valid Class C Driver’s License issued by the State of North Carolina.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to drive a vehicle, perform extensive reading and operate a computer terminal.
  • Ability to perform medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical skills and to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate complex information effectively with a wide variety of people, both orally and in writing, and deal with culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision, and plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with County staff and the general public, and deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Ability to effectively problem solve and handle difficult situations, and react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to read and understand moderately complex written information.
  • Ability to organize and consolidate information, maintain records, prepare reports, and complete assignments accurately and timely.
  • Ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software.

  • Skill in operating multi-passenger vehicles, hydraulic lift equipment, and mobility equipment for handicapped passengers.

  • Skill in public and interpersonal relations and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Provides public transportation services on flexible route and/or schedule; operates a variety of multi-passenger vehicles requiring a Class C driver’s license to transport Orange County residents.
  • Operates safety equipment including hydraulic lift, wheelchairs, and mobility securement devices to ensure passenger safety and well-being; assists passengers on and off vehicle.
  • Operates open-air radios to ensure safe and timely arrivals, departures and transfers in route while protecting client confidentiality.
  • Maintains driver’s manifest and ridership information utilizing proprietary software applications on tablets or other electronic devices, and provides supervisory notification, and Motor Pool notification on a regular basis.
  • Monitors and maintains the interior and exterior condition of the vehicle.
  • Performs routine pre- and post-trip safety inspections on assigned vehicle and at the end of shift.
  • Contacts the OCTS Dispatcher when service disruptions or medical issues arise.
  • Ensures passenger fees are collected as verified by software applications.
  • Performs office/administrative support duties such as data entry, justification of manifests, and answering the telephone.
  • May use computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments.
  • Adheres to the department’s safety rules and regulations.
