About The Position

The Mobile Shear Operator reports to the Facility & Operations Supervisor or the Terminal Operations Manager. This role is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of the mobile shear, ensuring compliance with company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. Duties include operating power equipment for lifting, moving, and cutting/shearing metal. The operator should have knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance. This position operates under flexible parameters with the primary goal of achieving excellence in all facets of the role, focusing on providing high-quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently to decrease accidents and errors and increase profits.

Requirements

  • High School diploma, GED Certification, or experience in a similar role preferred.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older (U.S. applicants) or 16 years of age or older (Canada applicants).
  • Must be able to sit frequently.
  • Must be able to stand and walk frequently on uneven ground and throughout the yard.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to push and pull occasionally when moving materials.
  • Must be able to crouch or bend at the knees consistently to move or access materials or equipment.
  • Must be able to stoop or bend at the waist consistently to move materials.
  • Must be able to reach at arms length and overhead frequently.
  • Must be able to twist and turn at the neck and trunk continually.
  • Must be able to climb occasionally when obtaining items.
  • Manual dexterity required to handle, grasp, and manipulate materials, tools, and control knobs constantly.
  • Arm-hand steadiness required constantly for precision work.
  • Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continually.
  • Visual acuity needed for close detail work.
  • Mental dexterity needed to work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous awareness.

Responsibilities

  • Strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
  • Provides a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
  • Moves levers, depresses foot pedals, or turns dials to operate equipment for lifting, moving, or shearing loads.
  • Takes actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as other equipment, workers, or moving objects.
  • Examines completed materials for defects and verifies conformance to established specifications.
  • Tests and adjusts machine speeds and actions using gauges and hand tools.
  • Aligns machine with reference stakes and guidelines, ground, or positioning equipment following hand or audio signals from other workers.
  • Coordinates machine actions with other activities, such as positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
  • Provides backup or assistance throughout the yard as needed or assigned.
  • Installs, aligns, and locks specified blades, hoses, belts, and other parts or fixtures.
  • Performs general clean up at the shear.
  • Reports all equipment deficiencies or malfunctions requiring maintenance or repair to the proper supervisor.
  • Supports the Company’s Internal Control process, including understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls, and suggesting modifications to policies, procedures, and controls.
  • Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
  • Direct contact with Facility & Operations Supervisor, or the Terminal Operations Manager, and operations production employees.
  • Face-to-face and radio communication required daily.
