About The Position

BUILD, Inc. is seeking a committed, self-motivated, and innovative Mobile Mental Health Crisis Specialist (MMHCS) to provide emotional support and services to youth and their families who are victims of crime and/or homicide. This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating options and services to meet client needs. Services include connecting clients with resources such as mental health care, medical care, legal services, victim's rights, interpretation services, workforce development, financial education, and basic needs like emergency financial assistance, childcare, transportation, housing, and utilities. The MMHCS will also provide emotional support navigating the criminal justice system. Services are delivered at BUILD, in the community, and other locations as needed. The MMHCS is required to drive the MMH Van within the service area and reports directly to the Manager of Mobile Mental Health (MMHMH).

Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 years of direct experience working with inner-city youth in community-based services, or with community-based programming or a bachelor’s degree in social work, Education, Youth Development, Nonprofit Management, or related field
  • A minimum of 2 years of direct experience working with inner-city youth
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and insurance, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel locally.
  • Must be able to drive the Mobile Mental Health Bus.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally to achieve the goals of the program.
  • Must have cultural sensitivity when working with the population that we work with such as the Austin Community, Humboldt Park Community, Garfield Park Community, Northside Cluster Communities, and others that we may come across.
  • Proven background working collaboratively with groups of diverse backgrounds and experience.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including select weekends and events.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated comfort and confidence speaking in front of students and or parents/community members.
  • Ability to pass a criminal record and child abuse/neglect registry check.
  • Must not have any drug-related convictions.
  • Willingness to work in person from various BUILD sites and neighborhoods.
  • Must be comfortable talking to different age ranges from as young as 6 years of age to adult learners in any capacity whether it be in a classroom or one on one.

Responsibilities

  • Connect violence-exposed youth and their families with comprehensive services that promote healing, foster life-skills, and prevent high-risk/consequence behaviors that make them vulnerable to violence and other negative outcomes.
  • Advocates for victims of crime and their immediate families in problem situations which can vary from case to case.
  • Organize community pop-ups in areas where violence has impacted individuals in the community and hand out information about the services that we offer to the community.
  • Maintain relationships with various partners, including schools, government agencies, community-based organizations, and internal BUILD program partners.
  • Coordinate outreach events, integrate with BUILD events, and develop events related to mental health and wellness.
  • Document day to day activity and collect data to report back to their supervisor.
  • Drive the MMH Van within the service area.
  • Become an approved BUILD driver for the Mobile Mental Health Bus and BUILD van.
