About The Position

BigBear.ai is seeking a Mobile App Developer Intern to support the development and maintenance of cross-platform mobile applications that run on both iOS and Android. Unlike a platform-specific role, this internship focuses on building mobile experiences using cross-platform frameworks such as React Native (Expo), Capacitor (Ionic), or similar technologies. You will work alongside experienced engineers and developers across different layers of the infrastructure, gaining real-world experience in modern mobile development practices.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field
  • Must have completed at least 2 years of coursework (rising Junior or Senior preferred)
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 preferred
  • Basic understanding of mobile application development concepts
  • Familiarity with at least one cross-platform mobile framework such as: Expo / React Native, Capacitor / Ionic, Flutter (a plus)
  • Proficiency in JavaScript and/or TypeScript
  • Familiarity with React or similar component-based UI frameworks
  • Basic understanding of HTML5, CSS3, and modern web technologies
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and how mobile apps connect to back-end services
  • Experience with Git version control
  • Understanding of basic UI/UX standards and mobile design principles (both Apple's Human Interface Guidelines and Google's Material Design)
  • Strong communication skills, both spoken and written
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment

Nice To Haves

  • Prior project or coursework experience building mobile apps using Expo (React Native) or Capacitor
  • Familiarity with state management libraries (e.g., Redux, Zustand, Context API)
  • Exposure to native mobile development concepts in Swift (iOS) or Kotlin (Android)
  • Experience with offline storage, threading, and performance tuning in mobile apps
  • Familiarity with push notifications and cloud messaging APIs
  • Basic knowledge of continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines for mobile apps
  • Experience with app store deployment processes (Apple App Store, Google Play Store)
  • Prior internship, co-op, or personal project experience in mobile or web development
  • Familiarity with Agile practices (Scrum, Kanban)
  • Experience with open-source frameworks and contributing to open-source projects

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing and building cross-platform mobile applications using frameworks such as Expo (React Native) or Capacitor (Ionic)
  • Support the development of mobile client code solutions that deliver on Product Strategy and adhere to established engineering best practices and design guidelines
  • Help ensure the performance, quality, and responsiveness of applications across both iOS and Android platforms
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team including Software Engineers, UX/UI Designers, Quality Engineers, and Product Owners to deliver high-quality customer experiences
  • Assist in identifying and correcting bottlenecks and fixing bugs in mobile applications
  • Help maintain code quality, organization, and automation within the mobile codebase
  • Support integration of mobile applications with back-end services via RESTful APIs
  • Assist with implementing push notifications, offline storage, and cloud messaging features
  • Actively participate in all team Agile ceremonies (stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives), contributing to on-time and high-quality delivery
  • Engage with developers across various disciplines (Android, iOS, APIs, Web) to learn and share knowledge
  • Assist senior engineers in reviewing merge/pull requests and ensuring code quality standards
  • Identify technical obstacles early and work closely with the team to find creative solutions
  • Remain an active learner in all technologies related to cross-platform mobile development (React, React Native, TypeScript, JavaScript, Expo, Capacitor, etc.)
