Generalist technicians maintain CAP-defined competency across multiple laboratory departments, including Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Andrology, Serology, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. They need the technical abilities and theoretical understanding to perform the full menu of testing on blood, urine, and body fluids in accordance with CAP standards and departmental policies after training is completed. Testing and quality control work includes rapid tests, cell differentials, automated chemistry testing, blood gases, body fluid cell counts, automated and manual urine microscopy, blood typing, antibody screens, unit compatibility crossmatches, setting specimens for bacterial culture, rapid PCR testing, and processing specimens for in-house and reference testing. Technicians support CAP and Joint Commission accreditation standards in their work practices, participate in laboratory proficiency testing submissions, use the laboratory information system to result patient specimens and document results, and multitask and prioritize patient testing in a dynamic work environment. Phlebotomy competencies are established and maintained by all technical staff.
