About The Position

The Department of Pathology is seeking an MLS Supervisor (Clinical Care/Specialized Services Supervisor) to ensure the smooth, efficient operation of a clinical laboratory unit or shift. Performs clinical laboratory analyses on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. Many of these procedures involve numerous highly complex tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. Monitors for accurate performance of approved procedures while troubleshooting and ensuring training and instruction. This position will have responsibility for leading other laboratory professionals and continuously interacting and consulting with section management and other allied health care professionals. This position is 100%25-time, 1st shift, Monday-Friday.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • At least 4 years clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years is required.
  • At least 2 years of experience with high complexity testing is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience performing testing using molecular pathology methods is required.
  • Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successfully leading teams/groups in projects, work assignments, policy updates, etc. is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Comprehensive experience in molecular (nucleic acid-based) techniques and associated instrumentation is highly desirable.
  • Experience in flow cytometry techniques and associated instrumentation is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated technical writing (particularly for NCCLS and CAP-compliant documents) is desired.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in working with laboratory information systems, database, middleware, and web applications are desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervisory responsibilities in an academic medical center.
  • Experience working in an academic health center is desirable.
  • Experience with validation and implementation of new testing or instruments.
  • Experience with laboratory inspection and accreditation activities.
  • Knowledge of and applied experience working with collective bargaining work rules.
  • Experience developing and delivering laboratory sciences-based technical training.
  • Experience working with laboratory automation.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary in-house supervisory staff member for assigned section and in Core Services.
  • Communicate project statuses to appropriate others and manage customer expectations effectively.
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical and research specimens.
  • Serve as the technical expert for patient test result interpretation, specific tasks, work processes and procedures performed in a unit/shift.
  • Perform assigned bench duties regularly and maintain technical competency on designated benches.
  • Provide direct supervision of assigned personnel.
