Mission Systems Engineer - MBSE

SAIC•Crane, IN
•Onsite

About The Position

SAIC is seeking a Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) to support hypersonic programs at Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane. The role is embedded at the customer site and involves working directly with government engineers and program teams on hypersonic development efforts. The engineer applies systems engineering and MBSE methods throughout the system lifecycle, from concept development through validation and verification. The position includes developing and maintaining system architecture models, primarily using Cameo Systems Modeler, and applying SysML or equivalent languages to represent system structure, behavior, requirements, and interfaces. The engineer also supports the program’s transition from document-based to model-based engineering practices, reviews technical data and designs, contributes to technical reviews, and coordinates engineering work with government stakeholders, contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers.

Requirements

  • Active Secret clearance; Interim Secret is required to start, and the candidate must be able to obtain Top Secret.
  • Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline.
  • MBSE experience, including required experience with Cameo Systems Modeler.
  • At least 5 years of systems engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in product design, procurement, or production-floor engineering.
  • Experience designing prototypes or ensuring designs meet functional requirements from procurement through validation and verification.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering processes and methodologies across the program lifecycle.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce and present technical documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering degree.
  • Familiarity with SysML modeling language.
  • Experience supporting DoD hypersonic, missile, or advanced weapons programs.
  • Experience with NSWC Crane or other Navy warfare center programs.
  • Knowledge of MIL-STD-882 (System Safety), MIL-STD-461, or other applicable defense standards.
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as IBM DOORS or DOORS Next.
  • INCOSE CSEP certification or an equivalent systems engineering credential.
  • Familiarity with Agile or iterative development approaches in a defense engineering context.

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate Technical Data Packages for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with program requirements.
  • Participate in and support Systems Engineering Technical Reviews, including SRR, PDR, CDR, and TRR.
  • Support Drawing Reviews and Model Reviews to ensure design integrity and traceability.
  • Develop, maintain, and update system architecture models using MBSE tools, primarily Cameo Systems Modeler.
  • Apply SysML or equivalent modeling languages to capture system structure, behavior, requirements, and interfaces.
  • Ensure model fidelity and consistency across program phases and stakeholder views.
  • Support the transition from document-based to model-based engineering practices.
  • Formulate and document Concept of Operations (CONOPS).
  • Define, decompose, and manage requirements.
  • Conduct technical analyses and trade studies to inform design decisions.
  • Support system architecting, analysis, and design activities.
  • Conduct system performance analysis and margin assessments.
  • Manage interfaces, including developing and maintaining Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Plan and coordinate systems integration.
  • Support validation and verification planning and execution.
  • Prepare engineering plans, process instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with government engineers, program managers, and technical leads at NSWC Crane.
  • Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers to resolve technical issues.
  • Communicate technical status, risks, and recommendations clearly in written and verbal formats.
