Mission Critical Estimator
About The Position
Canyon State Electric is seeking an experienced Mission Critical Estimator to price data center and critical facility work for one of Arizona's fastest-growing electrical contractors. This role is available fully remote from anywhere in the U.S., or hybrid out of our Phoenix office - your choice. Remote and out-of-state candidates should expect periodic travel to Phoenix and to project sites for bid strategy sessions, client interviews, and project turnovers (roughly one week per quarter). Reporting to the Director of Estimating, this estimator owns pursuits end-to-end: conceptual budgets, design-assist pricing, and hard bids for high-density power distribution scopes. The work centers on the systems that drive mission-critical cost and schedule - switchgear, standby power, UPS, busway, and the long-lead equipment behind them. Between mission-critical pursuits, this estimator supports other large, complex projects across our markets - including industrial, cold storage, clean room, healthcare, and aviation work. We're looking for someone who has already priced this type of work, can defend their numbers in a room, and can work independently.
Requirements
- 5+ years of electrical estimating experience, including at least 2 years estimating mission-critical or data center work - or comparable mission-critical field/project management experience combined with estimating.
- Track record of owning large, complex electrical estimates from concept through award, with responsibility for the final number.
- Strong working knowledge of power distribution, standby and emergency power, UPS topologies, redundancy concepts (N+1, 2N), and applicable codes and standards (NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 110).
- Proficiency with electrical estimating software - ConEst, Accubid, McCormick, or similar; ConEst experience preferred.
- Advanced Bluebeam skills for digital takeoff and markup; comfort working from BIM-derived information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel in particular) and cloud collaboration tools such as Teams, SharePoint, and online plan rooms.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and hit bid dates without in-person supervision; disciplined, proactive communicator across time zones.
- Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to identify scope gaps and discrepancies between drawings, specifications, and addenda.
- Ability to manage multiple pursuits with competing bid dates without sacrificing accuracy.
- Ability to handle confidential client information under NDA and maintain a secure, private remote workspace.
- Willingness to travel periodically to Phoenix and to project sites.
Nice To Haves
- Experience estimating across multiple commercial or industrial market sectors - industrial, cold storage, clean room, healthcare, or aviation - is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline is a plus.
- CPE or similar credential is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Lead detailed electrical estimates for mission-critical projects - hyperscale and colocation data centers, and adjacent critical facilities - from conceptual budget through final bid.
- Estimate other large, complex projects between mission-critical pursuits, including industrial, cold storage, clean room, healthcare, and aviation work.
- Perform digital takeoff and pricing for medium- and low-voltage distribution, switchgear, generators and paralleling gear, UPS, busway, PDU/RPP, grounding, lighting, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems.
- Develop and defend labor units, productivity factors, and crew assumptions for high-density, repetitive, and phased builds.
- Track long-lead equipment pricing and lead times; solicit and level gear, generator, and UPS quotes; flag escalation and availability risk early.
- Build conceptual and ROM estimates for design-assist, design-build, and progressive GMP pursuits, and price value engineering alternates.
- Write clear scope letters, inclusions and exclusions, clarifications, and assumptions so risk is visible to both CSE leadership and the client.
- Own bid day for assigned pursuits: coordinate vendor and subcontractor pricing, finalize numbers, and present the bid strategy and margin recommendation.
- Partner with field operations, project management, and prefab on constructability, means and methods, and change order pricing.
- Support project handoff, including budget breakdown, buyout targets, and estimate walkthroughs with the project team.
- Maintain historical cost data, labor unit libraries, and estimating assemblies specific to mission critical scopes.
- Contribute to estimating process improvement, templates, and standards, and mentor developing estimators on the team.
- Represent CSE professionally with clients, general contractors, engineers, and vendors - including in virtual bid reviews and interviews.
