About The Position

Mining Engineer Intern wanted for an established and growing anthracite coal company. This role involves creating an atmosphere that supports the Company's operations, assisting in prospecting for reserves, evaluating mineability, and aiding in the layout of exploration to control costs. The intern will plot test results, evaluate exploration drilling, and assess reserves in relation to mine design and equipment selection. Responsibilities also include preparing mining designs/plans, providing field layout, assisting in surveying for production and exploration, conducting pit surveys, and calculating stockpile volumes. The role supports the preparation and maintenance of production/cost data, assists with permits and approvals, and helps develop reclamation plans. The intern will tour mine sites to ensure safety and compliance, support adherence to mining laws and safety regulations, and carry out responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable laws. The position requires the ability to work with mathematical concepts, apply practical problem-solving skills, interpret instructions, and effectively present information. Support for other members of the Engineering staff is also expected.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in mining, agricultural, or civil engineering, surveying or related field; or minimum of two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Mining and/or surveying knowledge or experience.
  • Knowledge of college level chemistry and mathematics.
  • Self motivated with good organizational and communicative skills and the ability to work with people.
  • Possess project management skills.
  • Computer skills should include working in Word, Excel, and CAD, Terramodel, Carlson, or similar land modeling programs.
  • Practical knowledge of local, state and federal regulations governing mining, environmental, safety and plant operations.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability, statistics, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or scheduled form.
  • Ability to effectively present information and response to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in prospecting for and proving new potential reserves for quality, consistency, and quantity.
  • Evaluate site relating to mineability and potential impediments.
  • Assist in layout of exploration to maximize utility and control costs.
  • Plot test results to provide cross sections and/or geologic model.
  • Assist in evaluating results of exploration drilling and/or other exploration.
  • Evaluate reserves estimates in relation to mine design and equipment selection.
  • Assist in proving existing reserves for quality, consistency, and quantity.
  • Evaluate all available data and coordinate with management and production staffs to prepare mining designs/plans.
  • Provide field layout of mining design limits and ensure proper execution by Mine Foreman/field personnel.
  • Assist in surveying to lay out and locate production and exploration drill holes, conduct pit surveys, check/set operational grades and limits to comply with the mine plan and mining permit.
  • Assist in conducting surveys of coal stockpiles and calculating volumes as required.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining production/cost data including pit survey volumes, equipment production, drilling & blasting costs, unit operations evaluations, etc. as necessary.
  • Assist in maintaining all required permits and approvals (renewals, revisions, Annual Bond Reviews, etc.).
  • Assist in developing reclamation plans to meet all applicable rules and regulations and to maximize the value of the property after mining is complete.
  • Tour and inspect mine sites to ensure safe work practices and permitting compliance.
  • Support adherence to mining laws and safety regulations, applicable rules and regulations for all Blaschak operations.
  • Carry out all responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Assist other members of the Engineering staff as required.
