About The Position

Provide assistance in transporting special education students. This position is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of students during transportation, including buckling them in, securing wheelchairs, maintaining discipline, and assisting with loading and unloading. The aide must also handle emergency situations, cooperate with school staff, and maintain confidentiality.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Skilled and effective in oral communication.
  • Good physical and emotional health, including the ability to lift and restrain students of varying age and size.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers and administrators.
  • Physical dexterity, mobility and strength to perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the school system's rules and policies, administrative procedures and state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Background checks must not be more than 10 years old.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in working with handicapped children preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the safety of students by buckling students in their seats and securing wheelchairs before the bus begins moving.
  • Makes sure the students are seated and under control during transportation.
  • Assists students with crossing of streets.
  • Assists students during loading and unloading at home and at school.
  • Handles emergency physical problems during the loading, transportation and unloading of students.
  • Assists the driver in maintaining discipline.
  • Constantly checks and observes on the welfare and safety of students riding the bus.
  • Cooperates fully with school administration and staff in special requests regarding student behaviors and physical management.
  • Assists students with problems related to their handicap.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policy and state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Maintains confidentiality with regard to student information.
  • Communicates effectively with students, parents, teachers and administrators.
  • Attends and participates in staff development and training sessions.
  • Performs other duties within the scope of his/ her employment as may be assigned.
