About The Position

Chesapeake Shipbuilding is seeking an experienced Millwright/Outside Machinist to perform the installation of marine machinery and equipment. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude, experience with shipboard systems, portable machining equipment, welding, piping layout and fabrication, and a commitment to safety, quality, and productivity in a shipyard environment.

Requirements

Experience with troubleshooting and repairing various mechanical equipment, including ANSI pumps, various types of compressors, blowers, fans, gearboxes, and mixers.
Experience installing below-deck auxiliaries, such as evaporators, heaters, pumps, condensers, and connecting them to the proper equipment.
Experience in the removal, repair, and modification or overhaul of various types of marine shipboard equipment and systems such as valves, pumps, hydraulics, turbines, reduction gears, generators, anchor windlass and steering gears.
Experience reading and understanding blueprints, sketches, and templates.
Experience with manual and semi-automatic welding procedures in multiple positions, including up to 6G.
Experience with ProPress piping systems and installation methods.
Familiar with industry codes and regulations.
Safe use of all tools and equipment.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively as part of a team.
Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and mechanical aptitude.
All types of physical movement are required for this position to successfully perform the essential functions.
Ability to use upper and lower extremities.
Ability to work outside in heat, inclement weather, and cold.
Ability to crawl, kneel, crouch, climb, and bend around and under equipment, on ladders up to 24' at heights up to 70', stairs, scaffolds, through small accesses, enter inside of tanks, and confined spaces, through hatches, and manholes throughout much of the work shift.
Occasionally lift/move up to 75 pounds.
Ability to work over bodies of water.
Ability to traverse uneven terrain, including loose pack gravel.
Normal level of visual acuity needed.
Must be able to understand and follow directions.
Normal hearing level needed.
Hand-eye coordination required.

Responsibilities

Safely and efficiently perform machine labor for equipment and machinery common to maritime vessels and/or general industry, including but not limited to pumps, valves, winches, and gearboxes.
Have an aggressive work ethic with a focus on production.
Ability to apply basic machine shop math
Demonstrate layout proficiency
Disassembles various types of equipment and machinery
Proficient at setting up and operation of drill presses
Perform overhaul, maintenance, and testing of pumps, valves, turbines, condensers, shafts, rudders, and winches
Set up and operate portable machining tools; proper care for and safely use hand and power tools
Fabricate, fit, and install piping systems using ProPress and SMAW welding processes up to 6G position qualifications.
Perform all other duties as assigned based on operational requirements.

Benefits

Competitive Pay: $26.00/hr - $35.00/hr depending on experience and passing 6G weld test
$1,000 Sign-On Bonus: Paid in two installments after 60 and 180 days of continuous employment for eligible full-time positions.
