Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Millwright Superintendent is responsible for leading the execution of mechanical and rotating equipment scopes on industrial projects, ensuring that all work is completed safely, on schedule, in compliance with contractual requirements, and to the highest standards of quality and workmanship. This is a site-based position supporting projects across Western Canada.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5+ years of industrial construction experience, with a strong focus on millwright or mechanical scopes.
  • Proven experience in a supervisory or superintendent-level role overseeing millwright or mechanical scopes.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial machinery installation, alignment, rigging, and maintenance practices.
  • Experience with rotating equipment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Valid Journeyperson Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) certification or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of commissioning, testing, and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability managing craft labour in an industrial environment.
  • Solid understanding of industrial safety procedures and lifting/rigging protocols.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple work fronts in fast-paced environments.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in bid reviews to validate constructability, labour productivity, and mechanical equipment scope requirements.
  • Lead field execution of millwright scopes including installation, alignment, maintenance, and repair of industrial machinery and rotating equipment.
  • Review and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment manuals, and alignment requirements to ensure accurate execution.
  • Oversee rigging, hoisting, and installation of heavy equipment, ensuring proper procedures and safety standards are followed.
  • Ensure precision alignment of machinery, including shafts, bearings, couplings, and gear systems to required tolerances.
  • Coordinate maintenance and troubleshooting activities for hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Monitor inspection, testing, and commissioning of mechanical systems to verify operational performance and reliability.
  • Develop and manage construction and look-ahead schedules, ensuring labour, materials, and equipment are aligned with project needs.
  • Work closely with EHS teams to implement and enforce site safety programs and Aecon’s zero-injury culture.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders for seamless execution of work.
  • Interface with client representatives to provide progress updates and resolve field-related mechanical issues.
  • Support change management processes related to scope, schedule, and equipment requirements.
  • Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies in collaboration with project teams.
  • Mentor and develop forepersons, journeypersons, and apprentices, fostering a high-performance and inclusive team culture.
  • Act as the construction lead for millwright and mechanical scopes in coordination with Project Management, Engineering, Quality, and Project Controls.
