About The Position

The Mill/Yard Operator operates heavy-duty forklifts, yard vehicles, and equipment to support mill and yard operations. The role includes receiving and inspecting inbound loads, preparing and completing orders for delivery or pickup, maintaining inventory controls, and ensuring safe and accurate trailer and container loading. Work is outdoors throughout the day except when inside the truck. The mill is part of Nucor Corp, described as the largest scrap metal recycler in North America. Advancement opportunities are limited; the next step is foreman.

Requirements

Experience operating heavy-duty forklifts (Taylor lift) is required.
Safety-conscious, detail-oriented, and cooperative with supervisors and coworkers.
Able to handle physically demanding work.
Able to walk around trucks and inspect fluids and conditions; climb truck steps for ingress and egress; hook and unhook trailer airlines; position wood dunnage weighing up to 50 pounds; and steer and stop a truck and trailer weighing up to 90,000 pounds during 12-hour shifts.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Knowledge of yard operations and equipment preferred.

Responsibilities

Operate and maintain heavy-duty forklifts, including a Taylor lift, yard vehicles, and other equipment.
Follow Safe Job Instructions (SJIs), training requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Receive and inspect inbound loads, complete paperwork, and supervise unloading personnel.
Prepare and complete orders for delivery or pickup; verify product integrity and counts; and ensure proper trailer and container loading.
Maintain inventory controls and a clean, safe work environment.
Report hazards or other issues to the supervisor.
