About The Position

This position is responsible for shift supervision of the entire Spring Grove Mill, with all Hourly Working Leads (HWL) reporting directly through the shift supervisor on tour. The role involves providing supervision of all Hourly Working Lead (HWL) employees on a rotating shift basis, including approximately 20 employees. This position will also serve as the supervisor responsible for major asset startups such as pulping equipment, power and utility processes, paper machines and coaters. A key aspect of this role is establishing a safe workplace by adhering to company vision, mission, and values, as well as all safety policies and procedures. The superintendent is expected to set an example for safety excellence, hold employees accountable for compliance, and ensure housekeeping standards are met. Performance management is crucial to achieving mill performance goals. The role requires leading and supporting HWLs in safety assessments, working with operations and maintenance to mitigate risks, and ensuring safety and environmental training is completed. Additionally, the superintendent will oversee maintenance work using best management practices, deliver shift goals defined by the Mill Operations Director, and maintain working relationships with the union by following the collective bargaining agreement, acting as the primary 1st-Step Grievance contact. Leadership skills, including communication, leading by example, recognizing performance, addressing non-performance, and effective people, process, and equipment management are essential. The role involves supervising training, providing direction and assignments through HWLs, and administering corrective and disciplinary actions. Coordination with HWLs, other shift supervisors, department superintendents, maintenance and operations leaders, engineering, and support groups is necessary. The superintendent will direct the efficient operation of the mill through effective utilization of HWLs, applying Pixelle and Spring Grove Operations Excellence processes, and serving as the primary leadership contact for mill emergency response, community and environmental care, and employee needs outside the scope of HWLs. Participation in and leadership of special projects as directed by the Mill Operations Director is also required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Strong people/team building skills, augmented by advanced capabilities with computers and applicable mill application software.
  • Demonstrate capabilities of an Initiative-taker that is intrinsically motivated.
  • Must demonstrate pro-active skills in problem identification and developing solutions.
  • Good problem solving, organization skills, and decision making that results in performance-enhancing actions to deliver goals.
  • Must be detailed oriented.
  • Must be willing to work diverse hours, including a mixture of 8 and 12-hour shifts, including holidays and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • Paper Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Three to five (3-5) years experience supervising in a union environment preferred.
  • Pulp and Paper experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of SAP/Optivision systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision of all Hourly Working Lead (HWL) employees on a rotating shift basis.
  • Serve as the supervisor responsible for major asset startups such as pulping equipment, power and utility processes, paper machines and coaters.
  • Take a leadership role in establishing a safe workplace by following established company vision, mission, and values, as well as all safety policies, procedures, rules, and guidelines.
  • Set the example for safety excellence by holding yourself, as well as all employees accountable for total compliance to all the above.
  • Establish expectations aligned with Pixelle Op Ex model to ensure housekeeping standards are established and followed.
  • Fully leverage the power of performance management to achieve all mill performance goals.
  • Lead and support HWLs, as needed, the completion of workplace safety assessments.
  • Work directly with operations and maintenance personnel, and through the area HWLs to proactively mitigate workplace risks to a level that is as low as reasonably practical.
  • Directly lead and / or work with and through the mill HWLs to accomplish all applicable safety and environmental training.
  • Directly lead and / or work with and through the mill HWLs to ensure all maintenance work on shift is accomplished using best management practices, as defined in the Pixelle Reliability Roadmap.
  • Deliver annual, quarterly, monthly, weekly, and shift goals, as defined by the Mill Operations Director.
  • Maintain working relationships with the union by following the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Function as the primary 1st-Step Grievance contact and follow the process as defined in the labor agreement and aligned with the guidance of your direct report.
  • Supervise the effective training of people, both through the HWLs and through one-on-one guidance.
  • Provide direction and assignment of work through the HWLs.
  • Counsel, appraise, and provide corrective and disciplinary action, as necessary within provisions of the Labor Agreement and any officially signed MOUs.
  • Coordinate activities with and through the HWLs and with other shift supervisor(s), all department superintendents, maintenance and operations leaders, engineering, and support groups.
  • Direct the efficient operation of the entire mill through the effective utilization of the HWLs, as defined through the Labor Agreement, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and the guidance of the Director of Operation.
  • Relentlessly apply all applicable Pixelle and Spring Grove Operations Excellence processes.
  • Serve as the primary point of leadership contact for all mill emergency response, community and environmental care, and employee needs that fall outside the scope of the HWLs, resulting from unplanned events.
  • Participate in and lead special projects as defined and directed by the Mill Operations Director.
