Telecom Mill Network Engineer

Global Cellulose Fibers•Memphis, TN
•$101,000 - $134,600•Remote

About The Position

The Mill Network Engineer owns the health and design consistency of the Layer 2 network inside GCF's manufacturing sites. This covers access and distribution switching, VLANs, spanning tree, trunking, wireless access, and the physical plant that connects them. The role is the voice of the mills inside Global Telecom. It brings mill operating realities into network decisions, and it makes sure changes from the MSP, vendors, and project teams fit how each mill actually runs. This role does not replace the MSP. It gives GCF an engineer who knows each mill's LAN in detail, can review and challenge proposed changes, and can resolve Layer 2 problems quickly when production depends on it.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent in hands-on experience.
  • 8 years of hands-on LAN engineering in a multi-site environment.
  • Manufacturing or industrial experience strongly preferred.
  • CCNA required or equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Manage PLTE deployment, OOB hardware and networked UPSs
  • CCNP Enterprise preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Switching and VLAN design: Maintain VLAN, trunking, and spanning tree design at each mill, including root bridge placement, port security, and EtherChannel.
  • Access layer standards: Suggest, capture, audit GCF switch configuration templates at the mill level and identify where a site must differ and why.
  • Wireless LAN: Support mill wireless coverage, AP placement, and SSID and VLAN mapping, and working with the MSP on Meraki.
  • Troubleshooting: Serve as GCF's escalation point for Layer 2 incidents such as loops, broadcast storms, STP reconvergence, duplex and MTU mismatches, and hardware, fiber and SFP faults.
  • Site knowledge: Know each mill's network layout, including IDF and MDF locations, fiber runs, critical production areas, and which switches carry which processes.
  • Documentation: Own the logical network records for each mill, including network drawings, port maps, and VLAN tables. Keep them current after every change. The LAN Engineer owns the physical records, including hardware inventory, spares, and ticket and time tracking.
  • Lifecycle input: Identify and rank aging or end-of-life switches and wireless gear at each mill and feed priorities into refresh planning. The LAN Engineer handles procurement, staging, and replacement.
  • Configuration baselines: Maintain the approved Layer 2 configuration for each mill so the LAN Engineer can restore it from SolarWinds during a hardware swap.
  • Voice of the mills: Represent mill operating needs in Global Telecom, MSP, vendor, and project discussions. Make sure production schedules, outage windows, and safety requirements shape network decisions.
  • Communication: Explains network issues in plain terms to mill staff and in technical terms to the MSP and vendors.
  • Builds trust: Build trust with all stakeholders
