About The Position

The Mill Equipment Operator is responsible for operating and adjusting 3 pellet mills, performing quality control testing of finished pellets, and testing incoming raw material and mix moisture content. This role also involves performing routine inspections of the process to identify any issues or problems and assisting the dryer operator with maintaining pellet moisture levels. The operator will measure and record pellet quality metrics, troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, adjust feed rates and rolls/dies, and maintain a clean work area. Communication and teamwork are essential, including assisting other operators, completing shift reports, and reporting incidents. The role requires exemplary attendance, work ethic, professionalism, and a safety-first mentality, with participation in down day repairs and cleaning.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of all aspects of the production process.
  • A high degree of technical, analytical skills.
  • Must be able to pass the company forklift certification.
  • Requires lifting up to 80 lbs safely, nearly waist-high, and standing for up to 12 hours per day.
  • Requires ability to use catwalks and climb ladders that connect catwalks up to 30 feet high.
  • Requires mechanical and troubleshooting skills to solve pellet mill maintenance problems.
  • Requires the ability to do simple to basic math calculations.
  • Requires working in a high temperature/ humidity area.
  • Requires being able to work in confined spaces.

Nice To Haves

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operating and adjusting 3 pellet mills.
  • Performing QC testing of finished pellets.
  • Testing of incoming raw material and mix moisture content.
  • Performing roll changes on pellet mills using overhead hoist.
  • Performing routine inspections of the process to identify any issues or problems.
  • Assisting dryer operator with keeping pellet moisture between 4-4.5% moisture content by giving feedback to dryer operator.
  • Measuring and recording the Durability, volume of fines, pellet diameter, and performing soak tests on finished pellets to keep quality in line with PFI standards.
  • Troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, spot fires, and hot bearings.
  • Maintaining pellet mill feed rates and adjusting or changing pellet mill rolls/dies accordingly.
  • Maintaining a clean work area by clearing piles of sawdust around the mill room.
  • Performing ash tests on mix as well as the finished pellet and communicating these to the dryer op.
  • Performing visual volumes of the silo’s volume and reporting that to the dryer op.
  • Assisting the Packaging, Loader, and dryer Operators on the shift.
  • Collecting the shift Operator reports and verifying that the paperwork is complete and accurate.
  • Completing daily Shift Summary Reports.
  • Reporting and monitoring incidents, accidents, and maintenance requests.
  • Leading by example with exemplary attendance, work ethic, positive attitude, professionalism, and a safety-first mentality.
  • Participating in down day repairs and cleaning of the process.
  • Performing other duties as required.
