About The Position

The Milk Bank Technician works in the nutrition room preparing all feedings for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) infants. Under the supervision of the Milk Bank Coordinator, and in accordance with defined policies and procedures for the Milk Bank, the Milk Bank Pasteurization Technician provides necessary technical support to properly process donor human milk. Duties may include the performance of basic technical skills not requiring licensure, such as, but not limited to: assisting the Milk Bank Coordinator and RN in gathering screening and necessary processing data via Milk Bank Data Base, performing necessary tasks needed for processing of donor human milk as directed the milk bank RN, performing analysis of milk specimens as directed by Milk Bank RN, preparing milk specimens for transport to the laboratory, performing department maintenance activities (preparing of donor packets, lab packets, coolers, stocking, cleaning and moving equipment, ordering and procuring supplies, etc.), preparing milk to be dispensed to outlying hospitals or out-patients, preparing dry ice for milk shipments, basic customer services (directions, visitor control, and other functions as needed). Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Experience in health care delivery setting (CMA, CNA, Patient Care Tech, Nursing Student, etc.) or comparable experience in a healthcare setting preferred
  • Successful completion of the organization, unit and job specific competencies within a reasonable orientation period.
  • Skill and proficiency in oral and written grammar, communication and basic mathematics
  • Able to read and interpret data from equipment and computers
  • Ability to gather data and set appropriate plan of action, in coordination with RN, and within the scope of the Milk Bank Technician Role
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and through writing with patients, visitors and all members of the health care team
  • Must be able to accept delegation and negotiate task priorities

Responsibilities

  • Provides information, direction, and assistance as appropriate to persons enter the Milk Bank.
  • Communicates with the Milk Bank Supervisor and/or RN regarding milk bank processes.
  • Performs necessary tasks needed for processing of donor human milk as directed by the milk bank RN. This includes checking in new shipments of milk and laboratory specimens, pooling milk, pouring milk into sterile bottles, sealing bottles, pasteurizing milk in the Sterifeed Pasteurizer, and completing necessary paperwork concerning the pasteurization process.
  • Performs necessary tasks needed for correct pasteurization process. This include proper use of the Sterifeed Pasteurizer, and use of Calais milk analyzer equipment and computer software, This also includes proper care of all equipment needed for processing milk.
  • Performing analysis of milk specimens as directed by RN or Systems Coordinator using the Calais Milk Analyzer.
  • Prepares milk to be dispensed to outlying hospitals or out-patients
  • Prepares dry ice for milk shipments.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly environment
  • Assumes responsibility for own growth and development.
  • Prepare unit dose feedings using Timeless Software for NICU infants
