About The Position

The Virginia Department of Veterans Services is seeking a dynamic Military Medics and Corpsmen (MMAC) Program Lead to help turn military medical training and experience into meaningful pathways to civilian healthcare careers across the Commonwealth. This role involves bringing together military talent, healthcare employers, colleges and universities, regulatory bodies, state agencies, and workforce partners to solve barriers and build practical solutions. The Program Lead will identify where military medical training can count toward academic credit, clinical requirements, credentials, and licensure, and help develop the necessary referral systems and partnerships. The position also involves leading the MMAC Program and its staff, strengthening career readiness and employment supports, expanding clinical and educational pathways, and assisting healthcare employers with recruitment, training, and retention of military-trained talent. Additionally, the role will contribute to legislative initiatives, regulatory discussions, and statewide work groups to implement programs for veterans and Virginia’s healthcare workforce. The ideal candidate is a builder, collaborator, and problem-solver comfortable with both strategy and implementation, with a background in military medicine, healthcare, workforce development, education, credentialing, or program leadership.

Requirements

Comprehensive understanding of healthcare systems, workforce development, and credentialing/licensure processes
Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations related to healthcare service providers and facilities
Knowledge of military healthcare roles and their civilian equivalents
Experience in planning, analysis, and decision-making within programmatic or operational contexts
Understanding of career pathway development and educational advancement strategies
Strong oral and written communication skills for diverse audiences
Strategic planning, program development, and stakeholder engagement
Event coordination and public speaking
Data analysis, reporting, and dashboard management
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access
Ability to build and maintain partnerships with private sector hospitals and healthcare systems
Ability to independently manage a high volume of work/clients
Ability to interpret and apply complex regulations and policies to program operations
Experience with presentation development and public speaking
Experience with data management and analysis
Prior program management and supervision experience
Prior experience conducting training and developing educational programs.
Knowledge of administrative, human resources, procurement, and fiscal/budgetary principles.
Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory and program management principles and practices.
Experience with identifying and/or providing services/resources to the military population.
Prior military service as a Combat Medic/68W, Corpsman or Medical Technician/4N0X.

Nice To Haves

Experience in public health, clinical or medical services and prior military services as a healthcare professional with duties similar to a military medic or combination of education and job experience.

Responsibilities

Lead the MMAC Program and supervise assigned program staff.
Develop, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve MMAC career, credentialing, licensure, and education pathways.
Establish and maintain referral systems and partner networks supporting participants throughout the military-to-civilian healthcare transition.
Work alongside DHP boards, regulatory bodies, healthcare employers, educational institutions, workforce organizations, military partners, and other stakeholders to address pathway barriers.
Identify military educational and training equivalents applicable to healthcare education, certification, and licensure requirements.
Identify and expand clinical training opportunities for former military medical personnel.
Research and recommend opportunities to award academic credit for military medical education, training, and experience.
Provide career readiness, resource navigation, and employment-related support that helps participants understand and pursue appropriate civilian healthcare pathways.
Provide technical assistance to healthcare employers seeking to recruit, hire, train, and retain individuals with military healthcare experience.
Develop pathways across healthcare occupations and specialties, including nursing, behavioral health, dentistry, pharmacy, laboratory sciences, clinical specialties, and other areas where military medical experience may be applicable.
Support legislative, regulatory, policy, and work group initiatives related to military medical workforce pathways and assist with implementation of approved recommendations or statutory changes.
Maintain program data, performance measures, dashboards, partner engagement information, and reporting necessary to evaluate outcomes and inform program improvements.
Conduct presentations, outreach, stakeholder meetings, and other engagement activities to increase awareness and participation in MMAC.
