About The Position

The Military-Connected Student Programs Coordinator develops and implements programs and services, maintains relationships with stakeholders, and serves as an expert on student military and veteran identity. This role involves administering veteran and military benefits according to federal and state guidelines, providing information to prospective students, and assisting current students with their educational pursuits through connections to campus resources, advising, and community building. The coordinator will educate and advocate for the needs of military-connected students to enhance student success and retention at UW-Superior. The position is housed within the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center, under the Department of Student Support and Engagement, and also acts as a campus resource for various student populations. This is a full-time, 12-month ongoing academic staff appointment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of designing and implementing college student development programs
  • Knowledge of veteran and military-affiliated student needs/trends and support services to address those needs
  • Knowledge of best practices in selecting and supervising student and professional staff
  • Ability to present training to students, faculty/staff, and/or other audiences
  • Ability to effectively prepare and manage budgets, grants, and external funding sources
  • Knowledge of planning and executing programs and events
  • Ability to take initiative and work autonomously
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with a variety of populations on campus
  • Ability to collaborate with various stakeholders
  • Knowledge of using web-based technologies such as (but not limited to): Microsoft Office 365, student information systems, budget management systems, or student success systems
  • Ability to drive a vehicle for the purpose of conducting university business and meet the criteria for operation of state-owned-vehicles – Policy 615
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution with three (3) years as a veteran/service member or experience working with students who are veteran/service members/dependents of a service member
  • OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with one (1) year as a veteran/service member or experience working with students who are veteran/service members/dependents of a service member
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Candidates must be independently, legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and maintain their work authorization without the support or help of UW-Superior throughout employment

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education related to education, college student development/personnel, leadership, or related field
  • 2+ years’ work experience in veteran services or student development in a higher education setting

  • Serves as a unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups, providing information and education on military connected students
  • Manages benefit eligibility, benefit advising, and accurate delivery of benefits for military connected individuals
  • Advocates for military connected students in all aspects of campus life and promotes a campus philosophy of military and veteran identity inclusiveness
  • Contributes to the development, execution, and review of programs and services designed to meet unit objectives
  • Provide direct service to military-connected students with internal and external resources
  • Manage and promote the center and the services it provides for the retention of students who utilize the center
  • Hire, train, supervise and provide on-going leadership development for student staff
  • Serve as an advocate for military-connected students
  • Create and facilitate student development opportunities and success initiatives
  • Collaboratively organize and deliver orientation sessions geared toward military-connected student needs
  • Manage current budget associated with military-connected student recruitment and retention
  • Secure external funding (ex. grant funding donations) to supplement operational budget, write and submit state funded grant proposals on a biennial basis
  • Serve as a liaison (and potentially staff advisor) to recognized student organizations, such as those which enhance academic experiences and campus life for students
  • Support UW Superior’s effort to recruit and retain students
  • Complete required trainings and professional development as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned
