About The Position

This position is responsible for building barges and barge accessories according to blueprint specifications. The role involves laying out, positioning, aligning, and fitting structural metal parts in the shop in preparation for welding. It requires setting up and adjusting welding machines for GMAW, FCAW, and MCAW processes, and planning operations based on geometry, heat effects, and metal properties. The individual will also move parts using manual methods or equipment like overhead cranes and forklifts, perform finishing tasks such as removing high spots and slag, and inspect materials for defects. The role demands effective and efficient work in both team-based and independent settings, with a strong emphasis on observing and complying with all safety rules and wearing required personal safety equipment.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and AWS standard welding symbols
  • Experienced in GMAW, FCAW, and MCAW.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on a consistent basis
  • Must be able to stand, reach, walk and bend on a continual basis.
  • Must be able to work in a non-temperature-controlled environment (cold in winter- hot in summer), including work outside all year in all weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 years of production welding and fitting experience preferred
  • Higher vocational training preferred
  • Previous experience training others is preferred.
  • Knowledge of GTAW is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Layout, position, align and fit together fabricated parts of structural metal products in shop according to blueprint and layout specifications, in preparation for welding.
  • Setup and adjust welding machines in order to weld components and assemblies using GMAW, FCAW, and MCAW.
  • Plan sequence of operation, applying knowledge of geometry, effects of heat, and allowance for weld shrinkage, machining, and thickness of metal.
  • Move parts into position manually or utilizing overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • Remove high spots, slag and cuts bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, chipping hammers and cutting & plasma torch.
  • Inspect materials, components, or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions.
  • Work effectively and efficiently in both team-based and independent working environments.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment.
