About The Position

This role is for a Middle School Track & Field Coach responsible for guiding student athletes in a competitive setting. The coach will foster physical skills, teamwork, self-worth, and an understanding of the sport's pleasures and principles of fair play. The program aims to promote school spirit positively and develop student athletes to their full potential, including preparing them for the next competitive level.

Requirements

  • Minimum two years track & field participation or coaching experience preferred.
  • Experience with successful winning program coaching experience preferred.
  • Ability and evidence of being able to transition student athletes to the next competitive level.
  • Experience in teaching both fundamentals and higher level technical skills.
  • Strong understanding of all levels of track program opportunities.
  • Demonstration of strong knowledge of all sport related rules that pertain to the safety and welfare of the student athlete that are either school district, PIAA, or National Federation related or mandated.
  • Ability to sit and talk and hear.
  • Ability to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and move quickly when necessary to promote student learning and/or safety.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to push items of 50 lbs such as pushing children in a wheelchair or moving/rearranging furniture.
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
  • Auditory acuity to be able to use telephone.
  • Visual acuity to read correspondence and computer screen.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Must be courteous.
  • Must be cooperative, congenial, service oriented, and promote these qualities in the building.
  • Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
  • Ability to demonstrate good written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, staff, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to read, write and do computations.
  • Ability to work independently and make work-related decisions.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in prioritizing tasks, and problem solving.
  • Ability to use correct grammar, sentence structure and spelling.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching certificate preferred.
  • CPR certification preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct athletes in the fundamentals, rules of the sport, proper training techniques, and safety procedures.
  • Design and supervise all practices and meets.
  • Manage the entire track program with strong organization.
  • Promote good human relations within the student body, parents, faculty, and community.
  • Promote a high academic standard and establish academic supports for student athletes.
  • Plan comprehensive pre-season and post-season conditioning programs.
  • Serve as a positive role model, promoting high ideals of sportsmanship, appropriate student athlete behavior, and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Establish a procedure to inform student-athletes and parents of discipline policies and academic requirements.
  • Develop each team member to their skill potential.
  • Promote effective and positive communication with student-athletes, parents, administration, and coaching staff.
  • Promote a team concept and vision at all program levels with an emphasis on positive sportsmanship.
  • Communicate effectively and positively with student-athletes, parents, and media.
  • Relate and communicate in a positive manner to the student athlete.
  • Commit time in the off-season and regular season to improve the track program.
  • Accept and execute responsibilities/duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and Student Programs.
  • Adhere to guidelines and procedures set forth by the PIAA.
  • Maintain continued contact with administration/athletic office regarding scheduling, transportation, budget, safety, facilities, and staff selection/monitoring.
  • Monitor and maintain a safe and secure athletic facility.
  • Promote and market student athletes for collegiate level competition.
  • Manage, care for, inventory, and issue equipment.
  • Create and maintain records/statistics on the team and individual members.
  • Implement board policies including fundraising, season calendar, discipline, attendance, eligibility, and booster groups.
  • Develop goals prior to the season and submit for approval.
  • Submit season summaries following each season.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
