About The Position

St. John School is seeking a full-time Middle School Teacher and Athletic Director. This role involves promoting and supporting the mission of the Catholic Church and Catholic education, while also managing the school's athletic programs. The position requires a blend of instructional duties, athletic administration, and adherence to Catholic identity principles.

Requirements

  • Active, practicing Roman Catholic (preferred)
  • Respects and understands a Catholic school philosophy
  • Possess a cleared California multiple subject teaching credential (preferred)
  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Clear criminal background check (a clear Livescan for the Diocese of San Diego is a condition of employment)
  • Experience teaching in an elementary school classroom
  • 3 years of teaching experience minimum preferred
  • Positive professional references and recommendations
  • Negative TB Test
  • CPR Certified
  • Maintains emotional control under stress
  • Spend the majority of the day standing in the classroom.
  • While standing the teacher will frequently hold objects they are working with or demonstrating
  • Sit on an occasional basis when developing lesson plans, grading, etc.
  • Walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks.
  • Walk on both even and uneven surfaces
  • Deal with students while kneeling or squatting, stooping, or bending
  • Reach at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity; may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at the class
  • Assist in moving children's desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom
  • Occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Be inside the classroom.
  • Be mobile to, from, and within the classroom and preschool environment, as well as maneuver throughout the school facility.
  • May be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend trainings or workshops.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and support the mission of the Catholic Church and Catholic education.
  • Give evidence of lived Gospel values and model the teaching of Jesus.
  • Support and adhere to the code of conduct.
  • Help build the school’s faith community by participating in and planning school Masses, religious services, assemblies, and activities.
  • Obtain and renew the Diocese of San Diego Basic Catechist Certificate.
  • Participate in scheduled religious retreats or conferences.
  • Follow athletic guidelines set forth by the school, Diocese of San Diego, and North County Parochial League (NCPL).
  • Attend required NCPL Athletic Directors meetings.
  • Encourage good sportsmanship and Catholic values.
  • Recruit coaches and ensure they complete position requirements.
  • Register athletes and complete team rosters.
  • Communicate with the NCPL to coordinate game schedules.
  • Schedule practices.
  • Maintain sports equipment including uniforms.
  • Prepare facility for games.
  • Coordinate referees for games and their payment.
  • Communicate sports information with coaches, athletes, and parents.
  • Check student athletes’ eligibility.
  • Coordinate entry into tournaments and track meets.
  • Support athletic teams by attending games.
  • Coordinate reports to the school about team performance.
  • Communicate effectively with administration.
  • Plan and implement a program of instruction adhering to school philosophy, mission, SLEs, and curriculum standards.
  • Record unit and lesson plans in the curriculum map or other planning tool.
  • Show competency in teaching by demonstrating current, thorough knowledge of curriculum and subject matter.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with students.
  • Organize instruction and materials to maximize student time on task and motivate learning.
  • Adhere to all individualized learning plan accommodations and modifications.
  • Plan and implement a differentiated program of study.
  • Meet collaboratively with administration and learning support team for Kid Connect and ILP meetings.
  • Use appropriate materials and resources, including technological resources, to engage students.
  • Use a variety of effective instructional methods and review/update curriculum and methods.
  • Use data to drive instruction.
  • Encourage student enthusiasm for learning and good study habits.
  • Use a variety of formative and summative assessments to evaluate student progress.
  • Maintain a functional and pleasant learning environment.
  • Collaborate with peers, learning support team, leadership team, and administration.
  • Assist in assessing changing curricular needs and offer plans for improvement.
  • Confer with parents upon request and at designated times.
  • Respond to messages with parents, students, and staff within 48 hours.
  • Contact parents with academic and behavioral concerns, as well as positive progress.
  • Maintain communication history log for learning support students.
  • Maintain current and accurate records.
  • Update grades electronically as directed by administration.
  • Operate and care for equipment or instructional materials.
  • Use effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Provide lesson plans for a substitute teacher and maintain an emergency sub folder.
  • Develop and practice reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate techniques.
  • Use positive discipline approaches.
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Share responsibility for the supervision of all students in all areas of the school.
  • Contact parents when necessary for behavioral concerns.
  • Demonstrate professional responsibility by upholding and enforcing Diocesan and school policy.
  • Actively participate in the WASC/WCEA accreditation process.
  • Actively participate in extra duties as described in the staff handbook.
  • Respect the confidentiality of records and information.
  • Maintain appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance.
  • Demonstrate professional work habits by honoring schedules/deadlines, organizing work, and conducting tasks effectively.
  • Strive to communicate the positive aspects of the school program to the public.
