About The Position

Matchbook Learning is seeking a Middle School Social Studies Teacher to join their departmentalized middle school team at Wendell Phillips School 63 in Indianapolis, Indiana. This role is focused on teaching social studies to one assigned grade level (6th, 7th, or 8th), determined collaboratively based on the candidate's strengths. The position requires strong social studies content knowledge and the ability to internalize and deliver provided curriculum with fidelity. The school serves K-8 students with high needs, including a significant population of Multilingual Learners, and emphasizes a supportive administration, instructional coaching, and a restorative approach. The goal is to continue the positive academic trajectory of students in social studies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree — a background in social studies, history, geography or a quantitative field is strongly preferred
  • Strong social studies content knowledge at the middle school level
  • Valid Indiana teaching license OR enrolled in / willing to enroll in a state-approved transition-to-teaching program
  • Genuine growth mindset and openness to coaching and instructional feedback
  • Commitment to high expectations for all students, including students with high needs

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience teaching or tutoring social studies at the middle or high school level
  • Familiarity with IXL, or similar platforms
  • Experience working with Multilingual Learners or students with learning differences
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus

Responsibilities

  • Teach social studies to one assigned middle school grade level (6th, 7th, or 8th — placement determined collaboratively based on best fit)
  • Deliver instruction using Savvas social studies curriculum with 100% fidelity — all materials are provided
  • Use data to inform daily and weekly instruction
  • Participate in weekly/bi-weekly data cycles — always know exactly where students are and what they need next
  • Implement SIOP-aligned strategies to support Multilingual Learners in all social studies instruction
  • Conduct student conferencing to build individual relationships and academic accountability
  • Maintain a structured, high-expectation classroom environment using PBIS systems
  • Actively participate in coaching cycles, walkthroughs, and professional development
  • Communicate proactively with families about student progress
  • Collaborate with social studies and flex teachers, instructional coaches, and school leadership to support student growth
