About The Position

Redwood Day is a vibrant K-8 school with students, faculty and staff all learning together on our four- acre campus in the heart of Oakland. The Middle School Math and Science teacher will oversee the delivery of the 7th grade Math and 7th grade Science curriculum. They will partner closely with the other Middle School Math and Science teachers to further develop and curate a comprehensive, effective, and cohesive 6th-8th grade curriculum. The teaching load consists of two sections of 7th grade Math and two sections of 7th grade Science. The ideal candidate will have experience working with Middle School students and appreciate the opportunity to work with this age-group that is experiencing lots of transitions in three short years. They will also be a strong collaborator with other teachers and community members, a commitment to meeting the learning needs of each student, a teaching style that supports differentiated instruction, and an interest in helping to build our School community. As a teacher in the Middle School, this individual will also serve as an advisor and participate in various student, community, and professional development activities. Additional responsibilities include being actively involved in regular faculty meetings, supervising students during assigned duty periods, and accompanying students on an annual outdoor education trip.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Minimum of three years’ teaching experience, preferably at the 6th - 8th grade level
  • Strong understanding of curriculum development, effective instructional practices, and classroom management skills.
  • Natural rapport with children; understanding of developmental needs of 6th - 8th grade students.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity.
  • Commitment to adhering to all Redwood Day policies and procedures.
  • Experience using technology to support teaching and learning, including Google Classroom (preferred)
  • Teaching credential or Master’s Degree (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement appropriate 7th grade Math & Science curricula consistent with the Redwood Day philosophy, including differentiated and data-driven instruction.
  • Teach 4 sections total (2 math; 2 science), each of which meet 4 times per 8-day instructional cycle.
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of 10-15 students, supporting their overall growth and development.
  • If mutually agreeable, teach an additional Advanced Topics class for 8th graders in Geometry. This course meets 2 times per 8-day instructional cycle.
  • Establish a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
  • Collaborate with other Middle School Math & Science teachers to ensure curriculum alignment.
  • Collaborate with teachers on other Middle School and Lower School teams to integrate curricular components across subjects and grades.
  • Collaborate with Learning Services, Counselor, Middle School Deans, and outside professionals to assess and support students displaying academic or behavior difficulties, including attendance at regular student support meetings.
  • Communicate student achievements through written progress reports at designated grading periods.
  • Hold formal student/teacher/guardian conferences twice a year for each student, and any other conferences that may be needed.
  • Use available technology to supplement learning experiences.
  • Organize the classroom space, manage materials, and adhere to the supplies budget.
  • Plan field trips and classroom events.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents & guardians regarding students’ individual and group progress.
  • Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of student behavior and progress.
  • Supervise assigned recess and lunch duties.
  • Attend regular faculty and staff meetings, along with School-wide events such as in-service days, prospective student events, and Back to School Night.
  • Actively participate in the evaluation process regarding school programs and professional growth, the selection of curriculum, and the scheduling of school activities, etc.
  • Actively participate in the testing and evaluation process for current and prospective students.
  • Attend the Middle School Outdoor Education overnight trip.
  • Facilitate activities during the daily community activity period, including study hall, electives, and homeroom/advisory.
  • Other duties as assigned.
