About The Position

Friends' Central School is seeking a full-time Middle School English teacher to begin in August 2026. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of the English subject matter, a deep appreciation for the developmental needs of 11-to-14-year-old students, and a commitment to the School’s Quaker values and mission. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, along with an enthusiastic, dynamic, and innovative teaching approach. This role involves teaching four sections of Middle School English, likely for 7th Grade, with a focus on developing students' reading, writing, and speaking abilities within an inclusive, inquiry-based classroom environment. The teacher will contribute to curriculum development, assess student progress, and communicate effectively with colleagues, advisors, and parents. Additionally, the position includes serving as a student advisor, participating in faculty committees and meetings, leading service projects, advising clubs, and chaperoning field trips.

Requirements

  • Professional and educational background in teaching English.
  • Deep knowledge of current pedagogical practices.
  • Passion for the English language and linguistic expression.
  • Effective integration of technology into the classroom to enhance learning.
  • Degree in English or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of teaching experience, preferably in a Middle School setting.
  • Ability to relate well to Middle School students.
  • Ability to relate to parents and the wider community.
  • Passion for understanding the world in a historical context.

  • Dexterity for office machines and supply operation including but not limited to writing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, and printers.
  • Stooping, bending, reaching and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.

Responsibilities

  • Teach four sections of Middle School English – most likely 7th Grade.
  • Focus on building students’ skills in reading, writing and speaking.
  • Foster an inclusive classroom environment characterized by inquiry, exploration, and student engagement.
  • Contribute to the continuing development of the English and Humanities curriculum.
  • Assess students’ progress and performance in a timely fashion.
  • Communicate with teachers, advisors and parents/caregivers regarding students’ needs and progress.
  • Lead students to develop critical thinking, reading and writing skills.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the department and on the grade level team.
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of 10 to 12 students, acting as point person between home and school.
  • Participate in faculty committees, grade team meetings and faculty meetings.
  • Serve as a service project leader and club advisor.
  • Chaperone field trips including overnight to Echo Hill Outdoor School as well as other student activities that contribute to the life of the school.
