About The Position

Georgetown Day School (GDS), an independent, co-ed day school in Washington, D.C., is seeking a long-term substitute teacher for Middle School English. This position will cover the period from mid-September through October 2026. The ideal candidate will be adept at making literature relevant and engaging for middle school students, while also fostering their reading, writing, speaking, and analytical skills. A passion for literary analysis and a commitment to planning, grading, and student-centered work are essential. The Middle School English Department is a collaborative team focused on curriculum development and pacing. The role requires someone who understands and connects with middle schoolers, supporting their growth and development. Requirements

• A B.A. in English, Education, or a related field is required
• Strong background in writing and literature
• Develop and or present engaging lessons related to writing and literature
• Engage effectively with middle school-aged students in a classroom setting
• Effective communication with colleagues to provide students with the best possible educational experience

Nice To Haves

• Three years or more of teaching experience, particularly at the Middle School level are preferred

Responsibilities

• Teach four sections of middle school English (2 sixth grade and 2 seventh grade)
• Serve as a 7th-grade advisor, supporting the academic and social well-being of a small group of students, and steward the family/school partnership
• Fulfill other duties as assigned
• Attend additional meetings and responsibilities beyond school hours, as needed
• Attends grade-level trips as assigned
