About The Position

The Washougal School District is seeking a dedicated and qualified Middle School English Language Arts/Social Studies Teacher for the 2026-27 School Year. This is a 1.0 FTE position with a continuing contract after a provisional period. The teacher will be responsible for developing and maintaining a safe and effective learning environment, planning and implementing instructional programs to meet individual student needs, and evaluating student performance. Collaboration with administrators, educators, support staff, families, and students is crucial for establishing a tiered framework that addresses academics, behavior, and social-emotional learning (SEL) interventions. The role also involves nurturing a school environment that celebrates diversity, makes learning relevant to students of various cultures, and upholds the principle that student success is a teacher's paramount responsibility. The teacher will utilize appropriate instructional methods and materials, establish clear classroom procedures, provide for student personal and social growth, make referrals for assistance, participate in team planning, communicate student progress to parents, maintain student records, direct non-certificated personnel, and participate in staff meetings for professional growth. Additionally, the teacher will work cooperatively with a building team, demonstrate positive relationship skills, encourage family and community involvement, use technology for instruction, and adhere to district policies.

Requirements

Must qualify for a valid Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsements as required by law
Ability to implement classroom management procedures for large and small groups of students, providing an environment conducive to learning
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written and oral form
Ability to integrate relevant technology for the purpose of student learning across curricular areas
Flexibility and adaptability in varied conditions and settings
Ability to assess the needs of students and implement effective lessons to meet those needs through the use of appropriate instructional materials
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of staff and stakeholders
Ability to establish positive relationships with students, in a mutually respectful, supportive and accessible manner
Ability to relate positively to students and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, learning styles and/or disabilities
Ability to process information in order to make sound judgments and decisions
OSPI/WA state Teaching Certificate with an Elementary Education or Middle Level Humanities or English Language Arts or History/Social Studies endorsement or related subjects

Responsibilities

Develops and maintains a safe and effective learning environment
Plans and implements an instructional program designed to meet individual student needs
Evaluates student performance and progress
Collaborates closely with building administrators, educators, support staff, families, and students to establish and implement a tiered framework that uses data to meet the needs of each and every student through academics, behavior, and social-emotional learning (SEL) interventions
Nurtures a school environment that celebrates, respects, and values diversity, where teaching and learning are made relevant and meaningful to students of various cultures
Uses necessary and appropriate instructional methods and materials, which are suited to the needs of the students and to the nature of the learning activities, program and/or curriculum involved
Establishes and implements, in a positive and supportive manner, clear classroom procedures, routines and expectations
Provides for the personal and social growth of students
Makes referrals for assistance where appropriate
Participates in team planning focused on instructional practices and student learning
Communicates student progress to parents/guardians
Maintains appropriate student records
Directs the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel
Participates in staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the District and/or building principal, in order to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional growth
Work cooperatively with a building team in planning, supporting and providing instruction, and share with other staff the responsibility for supervision of activities and student behavior outside the regular classroom
Demonstrate positive relationship skills with students, families and district staff, maintaining ongoing and open communication
Encourage and provide the structure for ongoing, meaningful involvement of families and community members in the classroom and school
Use technology to provide challenging instruction to students of all learning levels
Possess knowledge of and adhere to Governing Policies and District Regulations and Procedures
Serves on staff committees as needed
Performs related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position
