About The Position

HELIX Environmental Planning is seeking Mid-Level As-Needed Biologists to support biological resources projects throughout Northern California, including the Sacramento region, Central Valley, and Bay Area. This Mid-Level Biologist role is ideal for an experienced consulting biologist who enjoys a balance of fieldwork, reporting, and collaboration—while maintaining schedule flexibility through an as-needed arrangement. Our Biology team supports a wide range of public and private projects, providing biological surveys, regulatory compliance, permitting, and habitat restoration services. As a Mid-Level As-Needed Biologist, you’ll work alongside seasoned professionals on impactful projects that shape California’s landscapes. Day in the Life of a Mid-Level As-Needed Biologist A Mid-Level Biologist at HELIX may spend time conducting biological reconnaissance surveys, vegetation community mapping, special-status species surveys, or construction monitoring. You’ll also contribute to technical reports, CEQA/NEPA documentation, and permit applications. This Mid-Level As-Needed Biologist role requires strong independent field skills, clear technical writing skills, and the ability to deliver quality work on schedule and within budget.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, botany, or related environmental science field
  • 3+ years of professional experience as a consulting biologist (including at least 1 year in Northern California)
  • Experience independently conducting biological resource assessments
  • Demonstrated experience preparing biological technical reports
  • Ability to work long days in the field over varying terrain and conditions
  • Valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record

Nice To Haves

  • Floristic survey experience in Northern California
  • Wetland delineation experience and/or certifications
  • Special-status species survey permits
  • Experience coordinating with regulatory agencies
  • Habitat restoration planning and implementation experience

Responsibilities

  • Conduct or lead biological surveys, including focused species surveys and pre-construction clearances
  • Perform biological monitoring for construction and restoration projects
  • Prepare biological technical reports, habitat assessments, and CEQA/NEPA document sections
  • Assist with wetland permit applications and supporting materials
  • Maintain accurate field notes, maps, and project documentation
  • Provide high-quality work products within established scopes and schedules
