This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of microbiology procedures requiring independent judgment in performing high complexity testing in both manual and automated methods. The specialist will adhere to laboratory procedures for specimen collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results. They will also follow quality control policies, identify and correct problems that may affect test performance, and perform and document instrument maintenance. The role involves reviewing the accuracy of patient results, recognizing age-specific differences in expected results, and ensuring proficiency testing samples are handled correctly. Additionally, the specialist may perform venipuncture or capillary puncture, assist in developing laboratory policies, and adhere to all safety and hospital policies. In some instances, they may be assigned responsibility for the operation of the micro department as Micro Tech in-charge.
