About The Position

This position is grant funded and is solely dependent on the availability of grant funds. It involves performing advanced laboratory work under the direction of the laboratory manager, including receiving and analyzing laboratory specimens and reporting results in a timely manner according to policies and procedures. The role works under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The position develops and provides information on laboratory recommendations, updates, regulations, policies, and procedures, aligning with standards from CDC, CLIA, Joint Commission, and/or CAP. The Microbiologist participates as a member of the Public Health Response Team (PHRT), responding to bio-terrorism events, large disease outbreaks, and other public health emergencies. Responsibilities also include participating in all activities related to the laboratory information system and being on-call as assigned or during an event.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Clinical Laboratory Science, Environmental Sciences, Public Health, Microbiology, Medical Technology, Chemistry, or related health field.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in microbiology, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or similar related field experience.
  • Proof of TB Test/Screening will be required to be presented prior to employment.
  • Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • Medical Laboratory Technologist Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or equivalent must be obtained within 12 months of employment.
  • Thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
  • Must undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
  • Must be able to function in a principle-based organization that has a culture built on character and core values.
  • Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.
  • Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory services in the areas of hematology, serology/urinalysis, chemistry and/or microbiology, and perform generalist proficiency in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Oversee instrument validation, quality control, proficiency testing, and equipment operations.
  • Maintain parts, reagents, and supplies for all laboratory operations.
  • Participate in public health projects related to Laboratory activities.
  • Develop and provide information on Laboratory recommendations, updates, regulations, policies, and procedures, such as those aligned with CDC, CLIA, Joint Commission and/or CAP.
  • Perform technical procedures proficiently in accordance with laboratory standards.
  • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration procedures related to each test performed.
  • Analyze Laboratory operations, review reports, make recommendations, and provide justifications when needed to improve Laboratory program outcomes.
  • Report critical results to appropriate personnel and health officials.
  • Assist in developing procedures for processing specimens to ensure accuracy of results, proper handling of specimens, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Support Laboratory information system on test build, validation, troubleshooting, and supporting deliverables, attending LIS meetings and support when required.
  • Support epidemiological disease investigations through laboratory operations.
  • Support laboratory specimen operations for testing, packaging, handling, and/or shipping.
  • Perform all other Laboratory related duties as assigned.
  • Process SARS-CoV-2 samples for quantitative RT-PCR analysis and qualitative SARS-CoV-2 analysis.
  • Support the wastewater surveillance program by processing, or shipping wastewater samples.
  • Perform instrument maintenance procedures as required.
  • Maintain and perform inventory.
  • Utilize PCR software and data analysis software to perform quantitative RT-PCR.
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper working order of the BSL-3 laboratory to ensure testing is performed in a sterile and regulated environment.
  • Perform drinking and wastewater bacteriology tests under the supervision of certified MTs.
  • Drive a City vehicle for City business use.
  • Perform related work as required.
