Metrology Engineer

Blackstone Industrial Services IncHouston, TX

About The Position

Blackstone Industrial provides innovative, high-quality, and sustainable solutions for critical rotating and static equipment. As one of North America's leading technical service providers, we excel in field services, parts, repairs, and engineering. Trusted by industries such as heavy oil and refining, petrochemical, power generation, energy transmission, and agriculture, Blackstone is shaping the future of compressor maintenance and operation, striving to set new benchmarks as we expand our operations globally. The Metrology Engineer is a degree-qualified engineering position responsible for the dimensional engineering of critical rotating equipment components. The role applies mechanical engineering theory — geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, tolerance stack-up and fit analysis, measurement uncertainty, and materials behaviour — to reverse-engineer, qualify, and release replacement components for centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, steam turbines, pumps, and gearboxes. The engineer owns the technical scope from as-found measurement through released manufacturing drawings and serves as the technical authority for the metrology function and the Parts Liberty program. A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a directly related engineering discipline is a mandatory requirement of this position. The duties below require the application of engineering theory and judgment and cannot be performed without that academic engineering background.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required; related engineering disciplines (Manufacturing, Materials, Mechatronics, or Aerospace) considered.
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. bachelor's equivalency.
  • CAD coursework or certification required.
  • Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and U.S. work authorization required.
  • Strong knowledge of rotating equipment, including compressors, turbines, pumps, and gearboxes.
  • Expertise in GD&T (ASME Y14.5), tolerance analysis, fits, clearances, thermal growth, and material effects on dimensional stability.
  • Proficient in metrology, measurement system qualification, and API/ASME standards.
  • Skilled in 3D CAD modeling, 2D drafting, scan-to-CAD software, and manufacturing processes.
  • Strong technical writing, customer communication, and Microsoft Office/PLM proficiency.
  • Demonstrated analytical problem-solving, sound engineering judgment, and ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams.
  • Minimum 3 years of engineering experience in rotating equipment, manufacturing, reliability, or metrology.
  • Experience producing manufacturing drawings and engineered component designs.

Nice To Haves

  • 3D scanning/contact probing experience preferred.
  • Background in field services, petrochemical, refining, or power generation industries.
  • Experience developing scope, estimates, and technical solutions in a quality-driven environment.
  • Proven ability to mentor technicians and junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead reverse-engineering projects from initial measurement through manufacturing drawing release and supplier hand-off.
  • Apply ASME Y14.5 GD&T principles to define tolerance schemes for engineered replacement components.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up, fit, clearance, and thermal growth analyses for rotating equipment.
  • Develop measurement strategies, uncertainty budgets, and qualify metrology systems to ISO 10360 and ASME B89 standards.
  • Create inspection and test plans aligned with API, ASME, OEM, and customer requirements.
  • Interpret specifications, drawings, and industry standards; identify gaps, deviations, and engineering risks.
  • Convert scan and measurement data into parametric CAD models and manufacturing drawings.
  • Assess component condition, disposition nonconformances, and engineer repair or replacement solutions.
  • Lead root cause investigations and prepare technical findings reports.
  • Develop engineering cost estimates, technical proposals, and support customer engineering reviews.
  • Serve as technical authority for design reviews, supplier verification, and quality assurance activities.
  • Oversee metrology technicians, review engineering deliverables, and maintain standards, procedures, and technical documentation.
