About The Position

Element has an opportunity for a Metallurgical Test Technician to safely perform testing in accordance with established SOP and QA procedures conducting Material and Metallurgical Testing within the laboratory. Element Detroit Wixom is a full-service metallurgical and materials testing laboratory supporting the automotive, aerospace, defense, and industrial sectors. The laboratory provides extensive expertise in mechanical testing, fatigue testing, metallurgical evaluations, chemical analysis, corrosion testing, and advanced failure analysis.

Requirements

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as work instructions, standard operating procedures, and national and international testing specifications
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization
• Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
• Experience in interpreting testing procedures and requirements
• Proficiency in Microsoft Applications
• Ability to remain calm when faced with pressure related to deadlines and multiple priorities.
• Well-developed oral and written communication skills to meet a variety of communication needs

Nice To Haves

• 1-2 years in the TIC sector is preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

• Preparation of test samples by sectioning with precision abrasive saws
• Mounting/grinding/polishing of specimens
• Hardness testing: Vickers and Knoop
• Macro and micro photography
• Basic metallurgical testing: coating thickness, case depth, image analysis, etc
• Summarizes test results using basic mathematical calculations and data reductions
• Testing is conducted on many alloys including aluminum, steel, stainless steel, titanium, copper, etc.
• Maintain related test equipment, tools and machinery in good working condition
