The primary responsibilities of the Metallurgist/Polymer Specialist I are conducting analysis on materials using a variety of analytical and testing methodologies. Metallurgists and Polymer Specialists examine the structure, properties, and performance of materials using techniques including optical and electron microscopy and other laboratory instrumentation. The position supports failure analysis investigations and materials characterization projects involving metals, polymers, coatings, and related material systems. The Metallurgist/Polymer Specialist I is responsible for generating technical findings, interpreting data, and preparing clear and concise reports for customers.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Polymer Science, or a related Physical Science discipline.
  • 0-2 years experience in a metallurgical laboratory environment
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong math and science aptitude.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong organizational abilities.
  • Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), laboratory ISO requirements, and safe laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to interpret analytical data and prepare technical reports for customers.

Nice To Haves

  • Academic research, internships, or industry experience involving materials characterization, coatings, corrosion, or failure analysis is preferred.
  • Familiarity with materials characterization techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), FTIR, XRD, and related methods.
  • Knowledge of coatings technologies, including paints, protective coatings, and thin film materials characterization is considered a plus
  • Understanding of corrosion mechanisms, corrosion testing methods is considered a plus
  • Experience with crystalline phase identification using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is considered a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform material testing, data interpretation, and technical report writing.
  • Consult with customers to determine the type of analysis required and obtain relevant background information.
  • Perform materials characterization using microscopy and other analytical techniques.
  • Assist with regular calibration, maintenance, and verification of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain and update chemical and equipment inventories.
  • Adhere to laboratory quality systems, ISO requirements, and safety procedures.
  • Assist senior staff with research, testing, and customer projects as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
