About The Position

A Metallographer Level I assists in the preparation and evaluation of metallic specimens used for quality control, materials characterization, and failure investigation. Working from established procedures and under the direction of senior metallography or MESP staff, this role performs routine tasks such as cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, etching samples, and conducts basic microstructural examinations and hardness tests. The Metallographer Level I accurately records data, organizes images and test results, and helps maintain laboratory equipment, contributing to consistent, high-quality metallurgical analysis in a production or laboratory environment.

Requirements

Minimum of two years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
Basic knowledge of hand tools.
Ability to climb stairs, lift up to 25 pounds on occasion and the ability to stand for a period of up to two hours.
Pass CCL Coatings Evaluation Certification within first 90 days of employment.
Pass the GE Aerospace vision test.
Ability to read and interpret specifications, procedures and standards.
Understanding standard laboratory safety procedures and the handling of dangerous chemicals.
Understanding of standard office computer software.
Ability to prove that you meet the status of a U.S. Person as one of the following: U.S. lawful permanent resident, U.S. Citizen, have been granted asylee or refugee status (i.e., a protected individual under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)).

Nice To Haves

AAS/AS in Manufacturing Technology or Metallurgy.
2-3 years previous experience in Metallurgical Laboratory.
Working knowledge of Superalloy microstructures.

Responsibilities

Conducts microscopic, macroscopic, and other tests and investigations on samples of metals and alloys for purposes as metallurgical control over products or use in developing new or improved grades and types of metals, alloys, or production methods.
Takes direction laboratory personnel in preparing of samples, such as sectioning, polishing or etching, and designates areas of sample where microscopic or macroscopic examination is to be made.
Studies photomicrographs and performs microscopic examinations on samples to determine metal characteristics, such as structure, porosity, voiding, homogeneity and compliance to GE Aerospace Specifications and Photo Standards.
Takes measurements of key metallurgical features of samples.
Interprets and documents findings and measurements and prepares drawings, charts, photographs and graphs for inclusion in reports for reference or instruction purposes, and writes reports regarding findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Assists Metallurgist and more experienced Metallographers in metallurgical examinations, failure analysis and other issues related to processing and production.
