BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area is an organization that believes in the promise of all children. Our team works with community volunteers, partners and other supporters to create safe environments for children to be between school and home and to provide caring mentoring relationships for children and youth. Requirements

  • A degree or diploma in the areas of child and youth care, volunteer management, and/or social work.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ combined experience in a role involved with child and youth programming, case management, volunteer management and partnership development.
  • The ability to work effectively with children and youth and have a solid understanding of child and youth issues.
  • Experience working with volunteers and an understanding of volunteer processes.
  • Demonstrated good communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and sound decision making.
  • Ability to work 2-3 evenings per week.
  • A valid driver’s license and vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience working with indigenous communities, high risk youth, the youth justice system and/or children and youth services is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Creating and fostering constructive, healthy and developmental relationships for children and youth through both 1-1 and group mentoring models using a combination of your own professional skills, as well as volunteer and natural mentors.
  • Engaging children, youth and families in the mentoring program continuum through intake, assessment, goal setting and program enrollment processes.
  • Determining the most appropriate mentoring opportunities based on young people’s strengths, needs and interests, while supporting participants through waitlist and onboarding processes.
  • Facilitating the development of safe, positive and meaningful mentoring relationships between young people and volunteer, natural and professional mentors.
  • Providing ongoing supervision, monitoring, coaching and support to participants (including both young people and volunteers) to ensure relationships remain constructive, impactful and aligned with agency and national standards.
  • Designing, coordinating and facilitating community-based mentoring programs that strengthen confidence, social skills, healthy relationships and connections to supportive adults.
  • Delivering mentoring opportunities that respond to community needs and create inclusive environments where young people can thrive.
  • Promoting participant safety and well-being by delivering training, orientation and education related to healthy relationships, mentoring expectations, personal safety and program guidelines.
  • Ensuring all participants understand their roles, responsibilities and available supports throughout their mentoring experience.
  • Engaging volunteers in creating positive mentoring experiences either through 1-1 or group mentoring experiences drawing on their skills to deliver engaging sessions that help build relationships and strengthen connection.
  • Building and maintaining collaborative relationships with schools, Family Resource Networks, community organizations and service providers to enhance supports available to young people and families.
  • Connecting participants to relevant resources and services that strengthen outcomes and address emerging needs.
  • Maintaining accurate participant records, case notes, program data and outcome reporting in accordance with agency, funder and national standards.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across programs to ensure coordinated service delivery and positive experiences for children, youth, families and volunteers.
